For this year’s Art History Graduate Student Association (AHGSA) conference, the association seeks to recentre ideas, identities, histories, artists and theorists that challenge the mainstream canon, or reframe existing ideas and structures towards critical, inclusive, liberatory ends. The group wants to centre critical and playful reinterpretation, as well as resistance and refusal as methodologies to investigate and illuminate new ways of knowing and being with one another. Organizers encourage papers that foreground underrepresented identities, ideas, histories; familiar histories with new critiques, ideas, and perspectives; established motifs, theories, and structures in service of new futures; and alternative art histories and ways of knowing. AHGSA seeks to explore how we can reuse old ideas, refuse harmful structures, and reclaim a more inclusive art history through this programming.
