Our students have access to a range of popular, time-tested resources that support learning and help develop and enhance their language and computer skills.
Language technology lab
Located in LB-618, the lab has 18 workstations equipped with a range of essential, up-to-date applications, from writing-assistance software to computer-assisted translation tools.
Any person registered in our courses or programs may use the workstations. The Department’s language technology lab is designed to support every student’s academic success and prepare them for rewarding professional careers.

Subtitle Edit
A versatile subtitle editor for creating and editing subtitles, with features for formatting and adjusting synchronization.
Microsoft Office and LibreOffice
Essential software suites for translation and academic work of all kinds, with word processing, spreadsheet and presentation tools.

Design software for creating instructional material for in-person, remote or blended learning.
Conversation groups and tutoring
To support our students in the learning process, we offer free French conversation and tutoring activities.
The conversation groups are centred around activities that encourage students to converse in French, to learn more about its cultural aspects, and to develop specific language skills.
The weekly tutoring sessions allow students to receive individual guidance during in-person office hours. Students can get help understanding instructions, practise speaking skills, and learn more about grammar, phonetics, vocabulary and other aspects.
Concordia's Webster Library
Concordia’s Webster Library is located in the same building as the Department of French Studies. Open 24 hours a day during terms, the library provides a variety of study spaces, including silent and zero-noise study areas, group study rooms and collaborative spaces. You will also find extensive collections that support your learning and enrich your student experience.
Discover écri+
What is écri+?
Simply stated, écri+ is a platform for training, assessment and certification of written French skills. Designed by a wide network of francophone universities, it is intended for people who already have relatively good written French but want to improve in certain areas.
Build your skills
Whether or not you're a student in the Department of French Studies, you may open a FREE account.
You can then test your skills by answering questions of increasing difficulty at the word, sentence, text or discourse level.
Each section is divided into specific skills that you can explore at your own pace. The platform provides detailed feedback for each error to help you understand and correct your mistakes.
Assess yourself
As you work through the exercises, you'll get a clear diagnostic profile of your strengths and weaknesses in written French, which helps you better focus your efforts.
You can also share your profile with your instructor in, for example, a writing course, so they can respond to your needs and better guide you along your learning path.
Become écri+ certified
If you're a current student in the Department of French Studies or a Concordia staff member, you can take the écri+ certification FREE of charge.
Once you have reached the appropriate level in a select number of skills, you'll become eligible to receive (in-person) an official certificate attesting to your proficiency in written French – a valuable addition to anybody's résumé.
