Whether you wish to study French, linguistics, literature or translation, Concordia’s Department of French Studies offers a wide range of specializations, majors, minors and certificates to help you achieve your goals.
Undergraduate programs
Our language and French-language literature programs prepare you for careers in many diverse areas, such as teaching, professional writing, journalism, communications and research. What's more, our courses help you hone your reading, writing and speaking skills, as well as further develop your critical thinking skills.
In our translation programs, you'll learn to translate from French to English or English to French, while you develop your intercultural skills. With the Spécialisation en traduction, accredited by the Canadian Association of Schools of Translation (CAST), you can become certified by the Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec (OTTIAQ). We also offer a co-operative education option, where you can gain professional experience through work terms in translation and related fields.
Our minor programs and certificate allow students in other programs to deepen their understanding of French and francophone cultures.
Graduate programs
Our graduate programs are aimed both at professionals seeking to broaden their skills and at researchers looking to deepen their academic knowledge.
Our MA in Translation Studies has three streams: a professional option, which provides the training needed for professional practice; a research option, with thesis, which allows you to reflect on translation-related themes, carry out theoretical or historical research on a specific corpus, or produce a literary translation with a critical commentary; and a research-creation option, with thesis, which invites you to explore translation as a space for experimentation through a dynamic process of research-creation, where the work of transformation, rewriting, and dialogue between languages allows new voices and forms to emerge.
The Certificate in translation technologies provides advanced training in areas like AI and machine translation, localization, and multimedia translation, including subtitling and video game translation.
With dedicated facilities for graduate students, including a research space and access to translation software, you can take advantage of a learning environment that fosters intellectual growth and prepares you for a successful career.
