Summer research opportunities

Learn about summer research opportunities for undergraduate students to get paid work experience with participating institutions.

The Inorganic Chemistry Exchange (ICE)

ICE is a summer research exchange program for undergraduate chemistry students who have completed two or three years of study. Students work on inorganic chemistry research projects at participating universities across Canada.

  • Research areas include synthesis, catalysis, materials science and bioinorganic chemistry. The program concludes with a workshop bringing together participating students and faculty.
  • ICE awards include a competitive salary and travel allowance, comparable to NSERC USRA funding.
  • At many universities, the placement may count as a Co-op work term.
  • Students are also encouraged to apply for an NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA), where eligible.

NSERC USRA program

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is a federal agency responsible for promoting and supporting research in the natural sciences and engineering, other than the health sciences.

The objective of the Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA) is to provide research work experience for students to complement their degree program and encourage them to consider graduate studies and/or a research career.
