About the Department

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is located in one of the top university sciences facilities in Canada, the Richard J. Renaud Science Complex on the Loyola campus.

Home to labs, research centres and spaces for our students to connect and collaborate, the Department fosters research excellence with a hands-on approach to learning and experimentation.

How do chemistry & biochemistry intersect?

  • Chemistry is the science that examines the structure of substances and their reactions to produce novel and useful products.
  • Biochemistry is the part of chemistry that deals with chemical changes occurring in biologically relevant systems. For example, changes taking place in living cells that are responsible for life processes.
  • Chemistry and biochemistry deal with complex concepts, and specialization has become the norm.

Specialization areas of chemistry & biochemistry

The traditional subdivisions are physical, inorganic, analytical, organic and biochemistry, but many new interdisciplinary subdivisions have emerged.

Specialization areas are all inter-dependent and many important discoveries have been the result of teamwork involving chemists from the various sub-divisions and across disciplines like biology and physics.

Opportunities for research & collaboration

Our department has over 24 faculty members who actively research, supervise and teach the next generation of chemistry and biochemistry professionals.

The technical staff in our department are trained to support lab experiments and equipment while students apply learned concepts with hands-on experience.

Undergraduate and graduate students are actively contributing to high-quality research and community-building in student associations and research seminars

The Department created Concordia's first co-op program in 1980 where undergraduate students can apply their studies to ongoing work experiences and jumpstart their career prospects.
