The Brucebo Residency in Gotland, Sweden

Brucebo cottage

Up to two artists will be selected to participate in a one-month residency beginning September 1st, 2026, with the possibility of extending their stay until October 11th.

Located in Själsö, approximately 7 km north of Visby on the island of Gotland, the Brucebo Residency takes place in a studio cottage surrounded by a distinct cultural and natural landscape. The program is presented in collaboration with the Brucebo Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting artists and preserving the legacy of Caroline Benedicks and William Blair Bruce.

Since 1972, the Brucebo Foundation has supported emerging Canadian artists by providing time and space for focused research and creation. The residency reflects a longstanding Swedish-Canadian artistic connection rooted in the lives and work of its founders.

As part of the residency, it is customary for participating artists to donate a work produced during their stay to the Canadian Collection at the Brucebo Museum.

Program overview

Up to two residents will be selected for a one-month residency in Gotland, Sweden, beginning September 1st, 2026 (with the possibility of extension until October 11th).

Selected residents will each receive an honorarium of $5,000, intended to support travel and living expenses.

The two residents will share a studio cottage with communal living spaces, and two-private bedrooms, in a quiet and immersive environment conducive to research and creation. Participants will be expected to work independently while engaging with the surrounding context and environment.

Upon completion of the residency, artists will be asked to submit a brief report reflecting on their experience and the impact of the residency on their practice.

Application criteria

Applicants must:

  • Have graduated within the past three years from a graduate program (MA, MFA, MDes, INDI, or HUMA) in Concordia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts.

  • Maintain an active studio-based research-creation practice aligned with their graduate training in the visual arts.

  • Be Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Performance-based practices are eligible only if they form a minor component of a broader visual arts practice.

Applicants are encouraged to propose projects that engage with the specific context of Gotland. The jury particularly welcomes site-responsive approaches.

Projects will be evaluated based on artistic merit, feasibility, and the clarity of the proposed research-creation program. The jury will also aim to support a diversity of practices and perspectives. The selection committee will jury the submissions and aim to notify applicants 2 months prior to the residency start date.
