Regular physical activity has many benefits, but too much of a good thing can be harmful. Exercising too much can lead to physical and mental health consequences including:

  • Injuries to tendons, ligaments, bones, cartilage (learn about preventing training injuries)
  • Muscle destruction and muscle mass loss
  • Heart problems
  • Sleep problems
  • Loss of appetite
  • Sexual desire loss
  • Irritability and depression

 

Signs that you may be over-exercising:

  • Exercise is more important than all other activities
  • You neglect responsibilities and relationships to exercise
  • Long-lasting muscle soreness, joint pain, aches and pains and injuries
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Elevated morning pulse
  • Sudden inability to complete workouts, decrease in performance
  • Feeling unmotivated and lacking energy
  • Increased colds, sore throat and other illnesses
  • Loss in appetite
  • Mood changes, especially irritability and possibly depression
