Lecture - Avram Finkelstein: Collective Queer Cultural Production, AIDS, and the Public Sphere

As a founding member of the Silence=Death and Gran Fury activist collectives, Avram Finkelstein will explore the AIDS activist art canon from an insider's perspective. His lecture will compare and contrast the practices of these collectives, and consider contemporary queer collectives as an entry point for consideration of what might be the strategies for a queer collectivity. He will contextualize AIDS in the 1980s in terms of public cultural production and political crises in general.

Finkelstein has long been involved in social justice movements, moving across disciplinary boundaries as an artist and writer. Finkelstein has collaborated on numerous public art projects for international institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, theVenice Biennale, ArtForum, MOCA LA, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, Creative Time, and the Public Art Fund.
