Concordia University's Faculty of Fine Arts invites applications for one tenure-track position in Interdisciplinary Studies and Practices for July 1, 2013.
The Faculty of Fine Arts enjoys a longstanding reputation as one of Canada's foremost environments for the study and creation of the visual, performing, cinematic, design and digital arts. More than 3,700 students are enrolled in 58 undergraduate and graduate programs, benefitting from the Faculty's vibrant cross-disciplinary environment, sophisticated facilities and extensive partnerships in Montreal's rich cultural community.
The interdisciplinary approaches of our Faculty place the theory and practice of the fine arts into wider socio-historical and philosophical contexts. Our contributions foster innovative research and the crossing of disciplinary boundaries in fields such as performance studies, gender and sexuality, sustainability, and a host of other areas. To complement this environment, we are seeking a scholar or practitioner working in the visual or performing arts who has a demonstrated record of achievement that situates the fine arts within broader fields of interdisciplinary academic inquiry. Possible areas of specialization include art education, art history, cinema, creative arts therapies, contemporary dance, design and computation arts, music, theatre and studio arts.
The successful candidate will have ongoing responsibility for coordinating and teaching Contemporary Issues: The Visual and Performing Arts in the Canadian Context, a required foundational course for all Fine Arts undergraduate students. With about 15 Teaching Assistants (TAs) and an enrolment of nearly 900 students in 2011-2012, this foundational course holds the potential for enormous impact in shaping students' first experience at Concordia, by preparing them to do university-level reading, writing and critical thinking, and magnifying their powers of communication. The course also provides an opportunity to expand the professional training of TAs, enabling them to develop state-of-the-art cross-disciplinary pedagogies in the context of rigorous undergraduate writing-based tutorials.
The teaching responsibilities will also include undergraduate and/or graduate teaching in the appropriate department within the Faculty of Fine Arts, and research method seminars at the graduate level within the PhD Humanities or Individualized (INDI) Programs. The Faculty of Fine Arts has actively extended its commitment to interdisciplinarity through its affiliation with these programs, which serve as bridges between that and the other Faculties and address hybrid and diverse notions of the self and society. Other duties include TA supervision and mentorship, liaison with Fine Arts units, administrative duties associated with the course (supported by an administrative assistant), and undergraduate teaching as needed.
Preferred candidates will possess a PhD or terminal master's degree, demonstrated ability to conduct and disseminate innovative research and/or research-creation, a minimum of two years university-teaching experience, an interdisciplinary background, demonstrated ability to develop and teach large lecture courses, excellent writing skills, strong organizational skills and relevant administrative experience. The candidate will be expected to participate in curriculum development and in university service involving committee and administrative work. Although classes are taught in English, fluency in French would be considered an asset.
Submissions should consist of a covering letter; a curriculum vitae; a statement of teaching philosophy and interests; a research statement and writing sample; a prospective syllabus for Contemporary Issues: The Visual and Performing Arts in the Canadian Context course; evidence of teaching effectiveness (including course syllabi and evaluations); and the names and contact information of three referees, one of which should be the candidate's department chair or dean or someone in a direct supervisory role. Short-listed candidates will be required to provide an attestation of terminal degree.
