Hosted by the CSLP on October 29 and moderated by Neslihan Sriram-Uzundal, The ABCs of Research brought together students from diverse fields and universities to explore the essential principles of good research. The roundtable discussion focused on participants’ personal research journeys, the foundations of rigorous inquiry, the development of strong research habits, and the importance of ethical and reflective practices.
As many of the discussants were international students, the conversation naturally turned to the ethical conduct of research within one’s own community. Participants engaged deeply with questions such as:
- How can researchers embed ethics and integrity at every stage of their work, and is it always necessary?
- In what ways can research be made more inclusive and representative?
- How should issues of authorship, data sharing, and conflicts of interest be managed?
- What lessons can be drawn from research failures to improve best practices?
- How can we begin to decolonize research, and is such decolonization truly possible?
- Finally, how is research connected to justice?
The event highlighted both the challenges and opportunities of doing meaningful, responsible, and transformative research in today’s global academic landscape.
Special thanks to Ian Klaus-Springer, Komal Waqar Ali, Lucia Lucena, and Yvonne Zhang for their thoughtful contributions as discussants, and to the audience members whose insights and engagement enriched the conversation.
