On October 9, 2025, the Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance (CSLP) welcomed Professor Lauren Bialystok (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education) for a timely and thought-provoking talk titled Transparency Is the New Originality.
Drawing a hybrid audience of more than 50 participants, both online and in person, the session generated a lively exchange on how generative AI tools such as ChatGPT are reshaping academic authorship and ethical standards in education.
In her presentation, Professor Bialystok argued that while declarations of AI use are increasingly common in student assignments and scholarly publishing, transparency alone cannot resolve the deeper ethical questions raised by these technologies. She invited educators and researchers to reflect on how assessment, authorship, and intellectual responsibility are being redefined in the age of AI—challenging participants to consider what meaningful originality looks like in this new landscape.
The ensuing discussion—marked by candid questions and nuanced debate—highlighted the complexity of balancing innovation with academic integrity. Participants from multiple disciplines shared perspectives on how universities might adapt teaching and evaluation practices to respond responsibly to emerging technologies.
