The Caribbean Studies Working Group will lead an open discussion of the work of writer, artist, teacher, and activist Suzanne Césaire, featuring the screening of the 2025 biopic The Ballad of Suzanne Césaire and a reading of a selection of her writings published as The Great Camouflage.
Along with her husband, Aimé Césaire, Suzanne edited influential magazines such as L'Étudiant noir (1935), subtitled "The Black Student, Monthly Journal of the Association of Martinique Students in France," and later co-founded the literary journal Tropiques, published in Martinique between 1941 and 1945, where she published essays on Surrealism as a tool for Afro-Caribbean resistance and on her relationship with the Caribbean landscape, among other themes.
