Larissa Fassler in conversation with Shauna Janssen

Join us for a conversation around the conclusion of the research residency of Berlin-based artist Larissa Fassler. Since September, Fassler has been conducting on-site research, worked in Concordia’s archives, and explored Montréal as she developed a new drawing that maps the university’s architecture alongside the city’s student and political movements.

This drawing will be paired with another based on Freie Univerität Berlin under the title Bodies of Knowledge: The Architecture of Dissent and will be shown together at the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery in the summer of 2027.

Larissa Fassler

Larissa Fassler (b. 1975, Vancouver) is a Berlin-based artist whose drawings, paintings, and sculptures map the emotional, political, and physical contours of urban life. Trained at Concordia University (BFA) and Goldsmiths, University of London (MFA), she walks and measures sites using her own body before translating fieldwork, overheard conversations and signage, and archival research into dense hand-drawn compositions that expose how power and memory shape public space. Solo exhibitions include the Musée d’Orsay (Paris); Kunsthalle Lingen (Germany); the Currier Museum of Art (Manchester, New Hampshire); the Esker Foundation (Calgary); and the Canadian Cultural Centre (Paris). Group shows include the Chicago Architecture Biennial and the São Paulo Architecture Biennial. Her work is held in the National Gallery of Canada, the Berlin State Museum, FRAC Nouvelle-Aquitaine MÉCA, and the Deutsche Bank Collection. Featured in Artforum, Frieze, Canadian Art, and The New York Times; monograph published by DISTANZ (2022). Represented by Galerie Poggi, Paris.

Shauna Janssen

Shauna Janssen, PhD, is an interdisciplinary artist-researcher, educator, and Associate Dean of Pedagogy, Faculty of Fine Arts, Concordia University.  She is founder and creative director of the Performative Urbanism Lab for Social, Spatial and Scenographic Experiments (PULSE). Her research and creation practice engages with the spatial politics of change in urban environments. She has staged, curated and designed several place-based and site-responsive art works and installations in Canada, Chile, Germany, Italy, Czechia, and New Zealand. Her writing on site-specific art, urban scenography, public space, theatre and architecture, performance pedagogy, and performative practices have been published in numerous essays and monographs, including with the Journal of Theatre & Performance Design, Field: a Journal of Socially Engaged Art, PARtake: the Journal of Performance as Research, Canadian Theatre Review, Journal of Artistic Research, Bloomsbury, Routledge, and Intellect.
