Join us for the next installment of the offsite visits exploring the many labs and spaces across Concordia University, giving you a closer look at what happens here!
This session takes us to the HKAP Training Center with researchers working with the Bergdahl Cardiovascular and Performance Physiology Lab at Loyola to see inside the current work happening!
The Bergdahl laboratory research focuses on the integrative regulation of blood flow, mitochondrial biology, and cardiovascular performance, with particular emphasis on how nutrition, exercise, and metabolic stress drive functional adaptation. In addition to its work on occlusion-based training, a central objective of the program is cranberry polyphenol supplementation as a nutritional strategy to enhance performance and recovery. Their studies have shown that daily cranberry supplementation can improve muscle oxygenation, vascular function, and exercise tolerance, while attenuating exercise-induced lactate accumulation. Building on these findings, the Bergdahl lab has applied nutritional and blood flow restriction (BFR) interventions in recreational and elite athletes, older adults, frail cancer patients, individuals with long COVID, and people with Parkinson’s disease, integrating physiological testing, imaging, and biomarker analyses to investigate mechanisms underlying functional improvement.
