Abstract

In this talk I will present some highlights from my research in the area of software modelling and design. I will focus on UML as a modelling language and notation. Also, I will touch on the (limitations of the) tools we are using for creating software. A common finding in this area is that a key use of models is to share knowledge and coordinate the engineering activities across developers and teams. Following this finding, I will present my ideas on future directions for the development of better software development environments (SDE). I will present my vision on directions for realizing ‘better SDE’s’ through (i) integrating AI for making SDE’s smarter and (ii) improving the usability of SDE’s.

Bio

Michel Chaudron is currently  Chair of the Software Engineering and Technology unit at the  Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Eindhoven University of Technology. Prior to this he worked at Chalmers|Gothenburg university (Sweden) and Leiden University (The Netherlands). He has an adjunct professorship at ITB in Bandung, Indonesia. He has worked in industry for 2 years as a software designer. His research interests are in software architecture, software design, software modeling and the interactions between these. Michel works both through empirical studies in open source and with companies. He has created a dataset of more than 100.000 open source projects that use UML. He is also interested in the didactics of teaching software design and the role of teaching abstraction.
