Japanese Calligraphy Workshop: Learn the art of shodo and write a kanji

This workshop introduces the art of Japanese calligraphy (shodo) through a hands-on experience.

As a practice rooted in simplicity and monochrome harmony, shodo reflects the cultural concept of kotodama (the belief that words carry a spiritual essence), while also offering a space for personal expression, reflection, and meditative engagement.

The workshop will feature Calligraphy Maïka, a Montreal-based calligrapher.

Participants will grind traditional ink made in Suzuka, Mie Prefecture (Japan), explore the expressive qualities of ink through its shades, the fluidity of lines, and the beauty of space, and write a Japanese kanji as their final piece.

Concordia students are invited to learn about the cultural background of Japanese calligraphy and experience its artistic and meditative dimensions.

This initiative is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Space is limited to 12 participants, so the event is restricted to Concordia students.
