Meghan Rennie

Thesis supervisor: Fenwick McKelvey

Meghan Rennie is often an artist, sometimes a scholar, and hopefully always a friend. She holds a combined Bachelor of Management/Bachelor of Fine Arts in General Management/New Media from the University of Lethbridge.

During her undergraduate studies, she worked as a research assistant for the Mesler Behavioral Science Lab, investigating the ways in which political orientation affected consumer behaviour; and for The Hip Centre, a repository of media on the rock band The Tragically Hip, supporting online knowledge mobilization. She worked as a teaching aid for the courses LBED1500: The Early Start Experience and NMED 2150: Memes, Influence, and Digital Convergence. Outside of academia, she was President of CKXU Radio Society and the Climate Justice Working Group.

Through her pursuit of an MA in Media Studies, Meghan is exploring the contentification of art online—as in, what happens to a creative work when it is posted on social media, where it becomes the fodder on which the attention economy runs, where it is presented to audiences as nothing more than a blip in an endless content deluge. She is seeking alternative ways of art-sharing and friend-making that sidestep social media channels and are more nourishing to their participants.
