Fall 2020 Graduate Orientation
Dr. Ashutosh Bagchi, BCEE Department Chair
Dear new and returning students,
Welcome to a new academic year 2020-2021 and to our Department! We thank you for trusting us with your program of studies.
I am sure you will have a rewarding time in the coming months. Although we are mostly going to meet/interact with you virtually, it is important that we remain connected on an ongoing basis.
We have set up many different resources to assist you in navigating online. Here are a few important steps we recommend you take to get you started:
1- Online Setup
If not already done, please create your @concordia email. The procedure can be found here: https://www.concordia.ca/it/services/office-365-education.html. If your professor uses the Teams environment, you will need this to login. Our orientation session for first year students will also take place on Teams or Zoom. In order for us to grant you permission to access our presentations, you will need to have set this up.
Note that this is different than your @encs.concordia.ca account. You must set up both. The second one, is what gets you on our Engineering mailing lists, on which you will receive important information from our Program Directors and Advisor/Assistants, example regarding awards, etc. It will also be where you will receive information on possible TAships. This 2nd email address (@encs.concordia.ca) will also be your login information for our lab software. (what many of our students do, is that they forward this email to their regular email account)
Both are equally important to set up at your earliest convenience.
2- Fall 2020 Graduate Orientation Session
You will have two (2) orientation sessions.
A global one from the University on September 3, for which information can be found by clicking here: Orientation;
And a local BCEE Department one, which will be held on September 10 (information to come shortly directly for our Graduate Program Directors).
Both will be held virtually and both contain different information. We recommend that you attend each event.
3- Your individual help needs re: registration/advising questions // Given that all staff are also currently working remotely and that the registration period is a rush period for everyone in BCEE every semester, we have tried to come up with an efficient system to help you formulate your questions and to keep providing you with the best and quickest registration assistance possible.
ALL requests for help MUST first be made through this link: https://forms.gle/LDXDkUXx7Kguw6da7. If you instead send a direct email to the Advisor/Assistants, your query will be redirected to this form.
From that form, your request will be shared with the appropriate person (note that you will hear the name Ms. Jenny a lot, but Ms. Jenny also has some help when in comes to registration) and you will receive a reply by email within 48 hours.
If you need to follow up on your form entry because you have not heard back from anyone yet, please email email@example.com and not the Advisor/Assistants directly. This will help us focus on serving everyone we must serve before the DNE deadline.
4- Other key resources in BCEE can be located here. You will shortly receive an email from Caroline, our Department Administrator and Elena, our BCEE Office Assistant, to explain card access, office requests and bursary procedures.
Wishing you all a very successful school year,

Precisions for the Fall 2020 - Graduate Orientation Session
A message from one of our Graduate Program Directors
Dear New Graduate Students,
Welcome to the Department of Building, Civil, and Environmental Engineering!
It is our pleasure to invite you to our Virtual Fall 2020 Graduate Orientation Session
Date: Sept 10th, 2020
Time: 13:00 to 14:30
Location: Virtual on Microsoft Teams. You may access our BCEE Graduate Students Team by clicking the link we sent you by email. The orientation session will take place there. At 13:00, we will initiate a meeting and you should get a pop up on your computer or cell phone (if you have installed it on there too). Please log in five minutes before starting the session at 13:00 to read the Orientation’s Agenda and simple housekeeping rules.
Once you access our Graduate Student Notebook on Teams, you will see a table with presentations from various Concordia sectors. We encourage you to watch these in advance and let us know if you have any questions related to the presentations or other areas of concern when you fill out the form confirming your presence. We will address common concerns in our live presentation, but time will be available for you to ask questions during the orientation.
The agenda will include short presentations from the Chair of the Department, Dr. A. Bagchi, the Graduate Program Directors, the Department Administrator and our Advisor/Assistants, which will provide you with specific information to our BCEE Department).
Please confirm your attendance by filling up the registration form: https://forms.gle/or6ApRkpGsPiJL2a8 . It will help us finalize the details of the event.
We look forward to meeting you all in the session.
