Ever wondered what happens to a pumpkin after Halloween? Come and find out how to be wasteful with your Halloween decor this year.
This workshop invites participants to consider how we might preserve the festive spirit of Halloween while fostering a more sustainable, circular food cycle. In this interactive session, ABCompost will explore how to celebrate Halloween more sustainably by rethinking what happens to pumpkins after they are carved. We’ll share ideas on how to use every part of the pumpkin and will include a live vermicomposting demonstration using leftover pumpkin waste from our sustainable pumpkin carving workshops! Through our vermicomposters, participants will see how organic waste can be transformed into nutrient-rich compost and support a more circular food cycle.
The weekly Concordia Farmer’s Market will be collaborating with ABCompost to provide a festive and educational final market. You can expect a vermicomposting demonstration, alongside a vendor costume contest, a spooky activity, and more with the Farmer's Market (3pm - 6pm)!

Catherine Rokakis is a Master's student in the Geography, Planning, and Environment program at Concordia University, working under the supervision of Dr. Kevin Gould. In addition to this, she is the Compost Program Coordinator at the Concordia Greenhouse and co-leads ABCompost, a student-led composting initiative that collects food waste from Concordia food groups to produce compost for the campus community. They also run workshops to make composting more accessible and affordable for students. Her work for ABCompost focuses on food waste diversion through vermiculture and educating students on sustainable waste management practices as well as food waste reduction.
