Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business (JMSB) and Montreal-based accounting firm Fuller Landau LLP have begun their annual search for Quebec’s leading family-owned businesses for the annual Fuller Landau Family Business Awards.

Established in 2011, the awards recognize Quebec-based family-owned businesses whose policies and business practices have a positive impact on the community and stimulate economic growth through local entrepreneurial ventures. Nominations are evaluated based on the financial success of the company, quality of business and family linkages, multi-generational family involvement, contributions to the community and industry, and innovative business practices or strategies.

“Family-owned businesses are the unsung heroes of our economy,” says Michael Newton, managing partner of Fuller Landau. “They employ a vast number of people in Quebec, are often innovators and tend to support the local communities in ways that too often go unnoticed. We are delighted to recognize their impact and to help propel them forward with this award.”

“Family-owned businesses are ubiquitous in Quebec, but we still have a way to go in providing them with optimal training, resources and other support programs,” says JMSB management assistant professor Alexandra Dawson. “We encourage all Quebecers to consider nominating a deserving family-based company. The nomination forms are available online, and are easy to complete.”

Nominations will be reviewed by a new panel of judges, chaired by Dawson. The five voting members of the judging panel consist of Terry Didus, partner at Heenan Blaikie LLP, J. Sebastian van Berkom, president and CEO of Van Berkom and Associates Inc., Natanya Khazzam of Heritage Linencraft and last year’s winners, Danièle Henkel, founder and president of Les Entreprises Daniele Henkel.

Awards will be handed out in the categories of small business, medium-sized business and large business. Winners of the 2013 Fuller Landau Family Business Awards will be announced during an award presentation in May. The event will also celebrate the JMSB students selected as the winners of the Best Student Family Business Paper Awards.

Nominations deadline: February 28, 2013
