IELTS

International English Language Testing System

What is the IELTS test?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most widely accepted English language test for academic, immigration, or professional purposes. More than 900 organizations in Canada — including Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada — and over 12,500 organizations worldwide accept IELTS as proof of English proficiency.

Choose your test

There are two versions of the IELTS test.

IELTS Academic

The Academic test evaluates your formal language skills for academic purposes. It’s designed for people seeking admission into undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate programs. The Academic test is also accepted for professional purposes including employment where proof of English proficiency may be required.

IELTS General Training

The General Training test is accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and for immigration to Australia, New Zealand, or the United States. It’s designed for people going to English-speaking countries to either complete their secondary education, apply for post-graduation work permits, or undertake work experiences and training programs.

  • You must set aside a full day to take your test.
  • Your exact arrival time will be sent by email 3 days before your test date.
  • You must arrive 20 minutes before your assigned arrival time for registration.
  • Candidates arriving more than 20 minutes late will not be permitted to take the test and will have to re-apply. No refund will be issued for the missed test.
  • Candidates must consent to being recorded during the speaking test.

As part of your online registration, you must provide a high-quality scan of a valid photo ID and bring the original version of that ID on test day.

Accepted forms of ID:

  • Passport (must be original, valid, and not expired)
  • Canadian citizenship card
  • Permanent residency card

Note: If you hold a Refugee Protection Claimant Document or Travel Document, please contact us at language.test@concordia.ca and we will guide you through the application process.

Additional notes

  • If your ID does not match the one used during registration, you will not be allowed to take the test or receive a refund. Photocopies, scans, or alternative IDs will not be accepted. For example, if you registered with your passport but arrive with your permanent residency card instead, your ID will be rejected, you will be denied entry, and you will not qualify for a test date transfer or refund. So please make sure you bring the correct photo ID.
  • “True copies” of photo ID are not accepted.
  • If your proof of identity has been sent for visa extensions, please delay applying for the IELTS test until it has been returned.
  • Any impersonation attempt will be treated as fraud and will result in the registered candidate being barred from taking any future IELTS tests.
  • You must also consent to a photo capture on the day of your test. Your signature and photo will appear on the certificate of your test results.

  • Candidates must ensure the accuracy of their personal information, particularly their legal name and date of birth as they appear on their passport, birth certificate, and/or other official photo ID. If you entered an incorrect date of birth or name during registration, please let us know immediately.

Test day security and personal belongings

  • Do not bring any valuable items with you to the test. Concordia University’s Language Test Centre is not responsible for lost or stolen belongings.

  • If you bring anything to drink, it must be in a clear bottle with no labels.

Concerns or complaints

If you have a concern or complaint regarding your test, you must:

  1. Fill out the official Complaint on the day of your test and hand it directly to the on-site supervisor
  2. In addition to the form you submitted, send us an official email describing your concern within 2 days of your test date.

Any concerns or complaints submitted after this 2-day deadline — including those made after results have been released — will not be accepted under any circumstances.

  • Various accommodations are available for candidates with accessibility needs. Requests for specific accommodation must be submitted to the Concordia University Language Test Centre at language.test@concordia.ca, along with a valid medical certificate, prior to registration.
  • The accommodation request can take over one month to process. Please submit your request in a timely manner.

  • IELTS test results are valid for 2 years.
  • Test results will be available online from the Test Taker Portal between 3 to 5 days from the test date.
  • The IELTS Test Report Form (or TRF) is the official confirmation of your test result that can be shared as proof of your English language proficiency. This can either be a print copy (IELTS on Paper) or an electronic version (eTRF; IELTS on Computer).
  • You can download your TRF from the Test Taker Portal and send it to any institution that requires it as proof of your English-language proficiency.
  • If the institution you are sending your test results to only requires a TRF number, you can access it through the Test Taker Portal.

If you are not satisfied with your test results, you can retake the full IELTS test anytime. Regular fees will apply.

IELTS One Skill Retake

IELTS One Skill Retake allows people to improve their IELTS score without repeating the full test, and instead retake a test focused on a specific skill (e.g. listening, reading, writing, and speaking). The IELTS One Skill Retake is only available for IELTS Academic tests.

To be eligible for the IELTS One Skill Retake, candidates must have taken an IELTS Academic test at a test centre that offers the IELTS One Skill Retake, and candidates can only complete their IELTS One Skill Retake at the same test centre. You must take the IELTS One Skill Retake within 60 days of your original test.

Cancellations or transfers due to illness

If you must cancel or transfer your test due to illness, the following documents must be provided to the Language Test Centre by email within 5 business days after the test date:

  • An original medical certificate covering the test date (only original medical notes are accepted); this note must be provided by a licensed doctor
  • A completed Transfer/Refund Form

If both required documents are not received by the 5th business day after your test date, you will be marked as absent and will have forfeited your right to all claims. Copies of these required documents sent by fax or email are not accepted.

If both required documents reach us within the deadline, you will have two options:

  • A refund of the test fee, minus an administrative fee of $90
  • A one-time-only transfer to a new test date (within three months of the original test date); you will be charged an administrative fee of $90 for the test date transfer

Candidates who receive a transfer to a new test date and who are ill on the second test date are not entitled to a refund of the test fee nor to any further transfer to a new test date.

Cancellations for other reasons

You can cancel your IELTS test any time prior to your test date by notifying the Language Test Centre. Refund terms depend upon when you cancel and whether exceptional circumstances apply.

If you cancel your IELTS test more than 14 days before the test date, you will receive a 75% refund of the total test fee. If you cancel your IELTS test between 5 and 14 days before your test date, you will receive a 50% refund of the total test fee. If you cancel your IELTS test within five days after the test date, you will not receive any refund.

You may cancel your test due to exceptional circumstances. All cases for exceptional circumstances and supporting evidence must be received by the Language Test Centre no later than five days after the scheduled test date. If the Language Test Centre approves your case, you will receive a full refund minus an administration fee of $90. If your case is not approved, the terms mentioned in the paragraph just above this one will apply.

Examples of exceptional circumstances:

  • Serious medical condition (see the top of this section for details)
  • Bereavement, trauma or other forms of significant hardship
  • Military service

Transferring your test date

Candidates who have been approved for a test date transfer must select a new date within the three months of their original test date. This new date will be approved by the Language Test Centre depending on availability, which may be limited. Candidates who wish to transfer to a test date that’s more than three months after the original test date should apply for a refund and then re-apply for the test.

Getting a refund

To obtain a refund, candidates must fill out and send an application for refund or test day transfer to the Language Test Centre no later than four weeks prior to the test date.  IELTS request refund or test date transfer form

Cancellations by the Language Test Centre or IELTS

If a test is cancelled due to technical issues caused by IELTS or Concordia University, the Language Test Centre will offer a new test date.

If the new proposed date does not suit you, you may receive a refund, and you will be responsible for registering for a brand-new test date. No further transfers, exceptions, or accommodations will be made.

No additional compensation will be provided under any circumstances for travel, accommodation, lost wages, or any other related expenses.
