Génération XEROX

This talk will focus on the second iteration of the curatorial project Génération XEROX, co-curated by Simone Beaudry-Pilotte, Mark Andrew Hamilton, and August Klintberg, on view at Concordia’s Webster Library until the end of September. The exhibition presents queer and trans print material culled from the Archives gaies du Québec (AGQ), focussing on forms of cultural production that circulate around the photocopier – as image reproduction technology, and social, creative space. The presenters will discuss the motives of the exhibition, selection and research process, and challenges of presenting fragile ephemera that is also charged with queer affect during the latest iterations of the Culture Wars. As queer and trans print is not a monolith, discussions will hone in on specific examples, and the differences between the two versions of the exhibition. At the core of the project is the elusive question: “what are queer and trans archival research methodologies?”

Dr. August Klintberg is an artist who works in art history. He is an Associate Professor in the School of Critical and Creative Studies at the Alberta University of the Arts (Calgary) and completed his PhD in Art History at Concordia in 2013. His practice is represented by Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain in Montreal.

Mark Andrew Hamilton is a musician, queer historian, and writer living in Montréal. His MA thesis ‘Active Grieving: The Aesthetic Activism of ACT UP Montréal’ is the basis for an exhibition of the same name currently running at the MEM – Centre des mémoires montréalaises.

Simone Beaudry-Pilotte is an archivist specializing in queer history. She currently works at the Archives gaies du Québec and the Archives lesbiennes du Québec.
