Expertise

From smart energy management modeling to urban energy visualization, and from smart metering IoT devices to flexible communication and visualization infrastructure, the Smart Cities CERC organizes research and training activities around four interrelated axes:

  • Clean energy systems for the built environment
  • Integrated built environment design
  • Smart technologies and optimized community operation
  • Collaborative community, knowledge mobilization and policies

There are unique challenges involved in enabling green energy solutions, and optimizing building, transport and resource efficiency transition in urban centres. Long-term solutions must also involve various stakeholders in both operational and strategic planning.

The applications and processes in smart cities should additionally make efficient use of the rapidly growing information and communication (ICT) infrastructure for collecting, processing and sharing information.

The CERC research program explores way in which cities can operate sustainably while maintaining services for its citizens. It builds on inter- and transdisciplinary research in the areas of environmental complexity, resiliency and sustainability, emphasizing the use of living labs for demonstration on an urban district scale and advancing urban data and modeling science.

In addition to its science and technology advancement, the work of the CERC contributes to climate proofing the nation and ensuring that Concordia, Montreal and Canada remain globally competitive in urban science and renewable energy technologies and contribute to global sustainability.
