Freelance Workshop Series

We are thrilled to announce that Art Volt is collaborating with FutureBound to offer a series of online professional training workshops that focus on freelancing. FutureBound is a Concordia based initiative that helps undergraduate students develop the skills they need to successfully transition from university into the workplace. 

This series is open to all Fine Arts alumni and undergraduate students. Workshops will be framed around the needs of freelancers within cultural and creative industries.

Building a Career as a Freelance Consultant

Tuesday, March 16 – 10am to 12pm in English with Megan Webster

Freelance consulting, or “engaging in the business of giving expert advice to people working in a specific field,” can be a super rewarding, meaningful, and lucrative profession. In this workshop, Megan Webster will briefly share her career journey, give advice and research to those interested in pursuing consulting as a profession, and take your questions. Join us!

Megan is an executive coach, teacher educator, and professional development (PD) consultant. In partnership with scholars at Vanderbilt University and the University of Washington, Megan supported two major urban school districts in the U.S. who aimed to radically improve instruction in their districts. Megan now coaches consultants, principals, and educational leaders in school boards across Quebec. In recognition for her work as a teacher, she was awarded the Prime Minister’s Teaching Award. Megan brings great energy, humor, passion, and rigor to the work before her; participants leave sessions with her empowered and ready for action.

Selling Your Service, Product or Organization

Friday, March 19 – 1:30pm to 3:30pm in English with Megan Webster

A lot of people are intimidated by sales, and don’t feel they have what it takes to market their products, services, or organizations. Forget “always be closing:” sales is all about listening carefully, being empathetic, addressing difficult issues as they arise, and being resilient. Being great at sales is about combining your relational skills with belief in the quality of your product, service, or organization. In this crash course, you will consider how to listen, understand your consumer, use practical tips, and face your fears. Through research, stories, case studies and practice, you will leave feeling more confident and prepared to sell.

March 23rd – 2pm to 4pm in English with Anne-Marie Mulumba

In a very competitive job market, a solid online portfolio gives you an edge, increases your credibility and puts your work in front of potential clients or future employers. Therefore, no matter what field you are in, you can only benefit if you put yourself out there. Now that your next step is to build an online portfolio to showcase your work, where do you start? 

  • In this interactive workshop, we will:

  • Choose your niche to increase the value of your brand

  • Showcase your skills and valuable experience online

Anne-Marie Mulumba is a designer, researcher and host of UX Sauna Sessions, a cozy user experience community in Montreal. She is building inclusive and accessible public services with the Canadian Digital Service (CDS), writing for the Black Professionals in Technology Network and completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design at Concordia University.

Get Discovered: How to Show Your Work on Instagram

March 29th – 12pm to 1:30pm in English with Diana Viola

People only need a few seconds on your Instagram feed to get an idea of what you do. That’s why Instagram is a fantastic platform for artists and creatives with a desire to showcase their work and attract more visitors, clients, and partners to their website. In this workshop, you will learn the secrets to turn your Instagram account into a professional and artistic profile, discover new ideas to build a promotional plan for your portfolio, and create your strategy to better sell your work. Prior knowledge is not required to attend this session, only your passion, artistic projects, or pieces of content to start shaping your feed and stories.

Passionate about content creation and personal branding, my focus as a communications professional is to build strategic digital communities by igniting purpose, quality, and longevity through storytelling. I hold a Bachelors Degree in Communications & Journalism and consider myself a lifelong learner committed to staying au courant with the latest digital trends and new branding strategies. Recently, I won the RBC Future Launch Scholarship to advance my skills in SEO & SEM, and complement my skills in paid & organic Social Media Marketing. A workshop facilitator recognized for empowering participants to find their voice to tell their stories, articulate their unique value proposition and establish their personal brand online. I cultivate authentic connections, both on- and offline, to shape memorable brands with high impact.
