Art Sales and Provenance

This webpage contains a section of online and print resources used to find art sales at auction. It also includes a section for researching the provenance - or history of ownership - of artworks and archival materials.

Art sales

  • Artnet (database) - gives access to information on the 1,300 galleries, 36,000 works (limited image access) and 13,000 primarily contemporary artists represented.
  • Canadian Art Sales Index (print journal) - index of Canadian art sales from 1977 to 2017. Located in the Webster Library Reference section, call number N 8670 C353A78+
  • Canadian Art at Auction Index (Heffel) (database) - providing over 30 years of Canadian art auction records.
  • Invaluable: The World's Premier Auction (database) - provides access to online auction records for fine and decorative arts, antiques, collectibles, and estate sales.

Provenance

  • Getty Provenance Index (online resource) - provides open access to millions of resources including archival documents (1550-1840), sale catalogues (1650-1840) and public collections from American and British Institutions (1500-1990)
