We are thrilled to renew Art Volt’s collaboration with Artch to offer another series of in-person and online professional training workshops this summer. Artch is an initiative whose mission is to identify, educate and disseminate the work of emerging Quebec contemporary artists.

How to Register

These workshops are available to students registered for graduation and/or to recent alumni who have graduated from Concordia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts, within the last three years.

Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis.

This workshop is designed as a guide to help participants acquire the tools and knowledge necessary to launch their career as artists. From the development of artistic identity to the creation of a portfolio, through the promotion of their work to the management of their network, participants will learn about all the steps necessary to achieve their goals and how to plan their day-to-day lives from this perspective.

Turning Your Passion into a Profession: Structuring Your Artistic Practice
Are you considering making a living from your art? Beyond creation, this means understanding your rights, structuring your practice, ensuring fair compensation, and mastering the contractual basics of your work. This training will equip you to better understand collective representation, artist remuneration, and professional contracts—how to set your rates, protect the dissemination and sale of your works, and secure your contractual agreements.

Part 1 – RAAV Services and Tools | Nathalie Dussault
The Regroupement des artistes en arts visuels du Québec (RAAV) supports artists in their professional journey. This presentation will introduce its role, activities, and available services—from legal and psychosocial support to professional development, including the Serge-Lemoyne Fund. You'll also discover practical resources: contracts, licenses, guides, and more.

Part 2 – RAAV-CARFAC Fee Schedule and Sales Contracts | Lana Greben
Using real-life cases and frequently asked questions, this section will address the practical aspects of artwork dissemination: exhibitions, talks, workshops, etc. You'll explore the legal and contractual foundations related to these activities, helping you better understand rights, negotiation, and fair remuneration in the visual arts field.

This workshop offers a structured approach for emerging artists to refine their writing skills and craft essential texts commonly used in artist dossiers: the biography and artist statement.Participants will gain insight into key principles and strategies for writing clear, concise artist statements and biographies that authentically reflect their work and careers. The 3-hour session begins with a lecture that demystifies each type of document, followed by an interactive workshop featuring self-reflection exercises designed to help artists identify essential aspects of their practice. To further support participants, the instructor provides personalized copy-editing following the workshop.

In this workshop, at once theoretical and practical, we will analyze different power dynamics in the ways in which they play out in the arts and cultural fields, and in society at large. Through different exercises, we will develop personal and collective strategies to challenge them.

For the past three years, the publishing house Pièce jointe has partnered with artch to produce the festival catalogue. Designed as a platform allowing artists from the cohort to express their reality, the catalog offers the public a unique window into their personal and professional journey. With the growing pool of artists that this community brings together, this edition's catalogue will take the form of a conversation between the past and the future. This training, led by the Pièce jointe team, provides artists with support and guidance with the production requirements of the catalogue.

David Lavoie from Artys Transit will give participants a presentation on packing methods and materials to use for safely transporting your artworks, whether they are framed or unframed paintings, sculptures, or any other type of work. With his background in museology and 20 years of experience in museum services, topics such as which materials to place in contact with objects, where to source materials, and their environmental impact will be discussed. Finally, different shipping methods, their associated risks, and insurance will also be on the agenda.

Participants will have the opportunity to interact directly with an influential figure in Montreal's contemporary art scene, founder of a gallery renowned for its innovative approach. Together, we will explore how your artistic work could fit into the current art market and benefit from the expertise of a professional who regularly accompanies artists in museum exhibitions, contemporary art fairs, and international biennials.

Join us as we learn to navigate through the confusing world of grant-writing! This is an introductory information session, where Bersonwill be guiding us through the funding opportunities available via the various councils and funding bodies. 

*Please note that the grants that will be discussed during the workshop are unfortunately only available to folks with Canadian citizenship. We welcome everyone to attend the workshop,however, as the skills covered can be transferred to other funding sources and models.

Offered by a professional artist for professional artists, this introductory accounting training course addresses the realities of self-employed artists who are in the process of becoming professionals. With practical content that can be put into practice, the training focuses on what you need to know about taxes as an artist without getting bogged down in the formalities of the infamous tax return. A work routine and a simple, effective toolbox will be explained to help artists with their filing, bookkeeping, and financial management. Generous course notes are provided to participants. The activities, planned discussions, and questions from participants will also provide an opportunity to exchange ideas and discuss life as an artist.

This workshop explores curating as a field of research, offering participants a deeper understanding of this role in the art world. Curating will be approached beyond administrative or organizational functions, but also as a creative and discursive process that connects creation to various contexts of presentation and reflection. It will also be an opportunity to engage in discussions about exhibition practice and ask questions!

During this workshop, we can address the following points: What is curating? An overview of curatorial practices and a definition of the role and its evolution. Who can be a curator? Addressing possible preconceived ideasaround curating and exploring different possible trajectories, including those of artists themselves. 

From research to design: How the research process nourishes the creation of an exhibition. Collaborative andartist-led curating: collaborative and/or artist-initiated approaches. Organizing an exhibition: The practical aspects of managing an exhibition, including logistics, funding, and communication with various partners, as well as the different roles attached to the creation of the exhibition. How to work in collaboration with curators.

This workshop will provide an introduction to the ways the art market works and the criteria that set the price of a work. This workshop will be an opportunity to analyze the factors determining the market value of a work (resume of the artist,nature of the work, production costs, prices charged by competition, etc.) and to identify the various factors that influence the art market. Participants will have some time to reflect on the criteria used to assess the monetary value of their work and they will be better equipped to set their price list. The first part of the training will take the form of alecture, followed by a discussion during which the participants will be invited to assess the value of their own work based on the art market standards discussed previously.

This workshop will help participants improve your grant applications and is aimed at artists at all stages of their careers. The artch team will lead a two-part session, beginning with a discussion of best practices, followed by an open period for reviewing and annotating application materials. Participants are invited to bring a current or completed application (printed or digital) to receive concrete feedback from the Artch team.
