Research Support Scholarship

HERMES awards grants to support its university students in oral or poster presentations at conferences or symposia.

Students will be able to use this financial support for activities directly related to their study project, such as:

  • Specialized training;
  • Consultation with experts
  • Offer financial compensation to study participants
  • Facilitate data collection in remote areas
  • Quantitative or qualitative analysis
  • Verbatim transcription
  • Participation in a training workshop
  • Participation in a writing workshop
  • Purchase of software (e.g., Nvivo) or a subscription (e.g., Antidote) required for the student's research work
  • Writing retreat (after participating in a writing workshop)
  • Other to be discussed

Deadline for sending your application:

This support is offered at all times, until the available funds are exhausted ($4,200 per financial year; half of the funds will be released in April and the other half in October.)

Eligibility requirements:

  • Be enrolled full-time in a university program with a research component that includes a research internship (minimum duration of 6 weeks), the completion of an essay (with significant scope for publication, presentation, and clinical/field impact), a thesis, or a dissertation under the supervision or co-supervision of a HERMES researcher.
  • Carry out a study project that is part of the HERMES research program.
  • The support must be used for an activity directly related to the student's study project.
  • This application must be submitted before the activity takes place.
  • The student must not have received other sources of funding for the same application.
  • The grant will not be used for personal compensation for analyses or transcriptions, but rather to pay individuals (e.g., students or self-employed workers) who will perform these tasks.

Students will need to provide:

  • Firstly:
    • The attached grant application form, duly completed;
    • Proof of registration for the current university term.
    • The contact details of the individuals who will perform these tasks (first name, last name, email address, student or self-employed status, university affiliation).
  • Secondly, if financial support is granted, supporting documents for expenses incurred must be sent:
    • Depending on the nature of the activity, the original invoices for expenses incurred for registration, participation, consultation, transportation, accommodation, meals, etc.;
    • Proof of registration in the case of specialized training;
    • Proof of the awarding of financial compensation to each of the participants in their research project;
    • Other supporting documents may be requested from students depending on the activities proposed in their scholarship application.

Allocation process:

  • The maximum amount awarded is $2,000. This amount will be paid and/or reimbursed to the student upon presentation of supporting documents for the expenses incurred. The payment terms will be determined with the student according to the proposed activity and the student's situation.
  • A student may submit several applications. However, priority will be given to the first application;
  • HERMES will review the projects and award them, within the limits of the total amount allocated to this competition.

Presentation (Poster or Oral) at a Conference/Symposium Scholarship

HERMES awards grants to support its university students in giving oral or poster presentations at conferences or symposiums.

More specifically, students who are supervised or co-supervised by an HERMES researcher and who present at a conference/symposium as the 1st or 2nd author are eligible for support of up to $1,000 for a presentation at a conference/symposium taking place in Quebec/Ottawa. Students are also eligible for support of up to $3,000 for a presentation at a conference/congress taking place outside Quebec/Ottawa.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Be enrolled full-time in a university program with a research approach including a research internship (minimum duration of 6 weeks), the writing of an essay (significant scope of publication, presentation and impact on the clinic/field), a dissertation or thesis carried out under the direction or co-direction of a HERMES researcher.
  • Carry out a study project that is part of HERMESS' research program.
  • Have an oral or poster presentation accepted as 1st or 2nd author in a conference/symposium in Quebec/Ottawa or outside Quebec/Ottawa.
  • Have a HERMES researcher among the authors of the article.
  • This application must be submitted before the conference/congress.
  • The student must declare any other funding received for their participation in the congress. The amount of the grant will be adjusted according to the remaining costs to be covered.

Eligible expenses:

  • For presentations at a conference/symposium in Quebec City or the Ottawa area, eligible expenses may reach a maximum amount of $1,000. This amount will be paid and/or reimbursed to the student upon presentation of supporting documents for the expenses incurred.
  • For presentations at a conference/symposium outside Quebec City or the Ottawa area, eligible expenses may reach a maximum amount of $3,000. This amount will be paid and/or reimbursed to the student upon presentation of supporting documents for the expenses incurred.

At most, reimbursed expenses will correspond to the number of days of the conference, plus one night before and one night after the conference/symposium.

Only original invoices are accepted for these expenses:

  • Symposium registration: provide a receipt issued by the conference/symposium organizer and the brochure listing the conference/symposium fees;
  • Travel: provide a scanned copy or receipt of the purchase of transportation tickets, original boarding passes, scanned or paper copies, invoices or receipts for plane/train/bus/taxi/car rental tickets.

If traveling by car (rented or personal), carpooling is encouraged. In addition, round-trip mileage may be reimbursed according to Concordia University rules.

  • Accommodation: Provide the accommodation invoice. Choose a reasonably priced hotel.
  • Meals: According to Concordia University's per diem rates. If a meal is included in the conference/symposium registration fee or hotel accommodation costs, the meal expenses for that meal will not be reimbursed.

Allocation process:

  •  A student may submit several applications. However, priority will be given to the first application;
  • HERMES will study the projects and proceed with their allocation, within the limits of the overall amount reserved for this competition.

Students will need to provide:

  • Firstly:
    • The attached form duly completed
    • An explanatory estimate of the costs for participation in the conference/congress that will be reimbursed;
    • Proof of registration for the current session at the University;
    • Proof of acceptance of your presentation at the conference.
  • Secondly, if financial support is granted, provide supporting documents for the expenses incurred

Submitting a request:

Publication (Translation/Writing/Editing) Scholarship

HERMES awards grants to support its university students in the publication of a scientific article in a peer-reviewed journal.

More specifically, 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle and post-doctoral students who wish to submit a publication as 1st author are eligible for:

  • Up to $1,000 in support for the revision of a scientific article
  • Support of up to $2,000 for the translation of a scientific article
  • Support of up to $2,000 for the writing of a scientific article
  • Support of up to $2,000 is available for publishing an article in open access mode

Deadline for sending your application:

  • The scientific article should be part of HERMES' research program;
  • Submit a scientific article as the 1st author in a peer-reviewed journal;
  • Have a HERMES researcher among the authors of the scientific article.
  • This application must be submitted before the scientific article is submitted.
  • The student must not have received other sources of funding for the same application.

Students will need to provide:

  •  Firstly :
    • The attached application form, duly completed;
    • Proof of registration for the current university term;
    • Copy of the scientific article or writing plan;

    • Specific to writing:
      • Writing schedule

    • Specific to translation/revision:

      • Scientific article must already be written at the time of the application for support
  • Secondly, if financial support is granted, proof of submission must be sent within six months:

    • Specific to “open access”:
      • Proof of acceptance by a scientific journal
      • Supporting documents for expenses incurred.

Allocation process:

  • The maximum amount granted is $1,000 for the revision of a scientific article for submission, $2,000 for the translation of a scientific article for submission, $2,000 for the dissemination of an article in “open access,” and $2,000 for the writing of a scientific article for submission. , and $2,000 for writing a scientific article for submission.
    • This amount will be paid in two installments, one after receipt of the application and another after receipt of proof of submission.
  • A student may submit several applications. However, priority will be given to the first application.
  • HERMES will review the applications and award the grants, within the limits of the total amount allocated for this competition.
