Here are the current scholarships and internships opportunities available at the Research Chair.

Undergraduate Research Internship - 2026

Description

Concordia University’s Research Chair on Gambling, funded by the FRQ-SC and the Fondation Mise sur toi, offers a short-term undergraduate internship lasting 1 to 3 months on a project related to gambling.

Eligibility

Candidates must be registered full-time or have been admitted to an undergraduate Bachelor’s degree program. Candidates must be supervised or co-supervised by Dr. Sylvia Kairouz, holder of the Research Chair in Gambling Studies. International candidates are responsible for obtaining the necessary documentation for their stay in Quebec.

Application procedure

Candidates must submit the following:

  • Letter of interest (1 page) stating the reasons for applying for an internship at the Research Chair;
  • Unofficial transcripts;
  • Curriculum vitae;
  • One reference letter.

Master’s Fellowship on Gambling - 2026-2027

Description

The Research Chair on Gambling, funded by the FRQ-SC and the Fondation Mise sur toi, offers an annual fellowship at the Master’s level. This fellowship seeks to encourage graduate research in the field of gambling under the aegis of the Research Chair. The Chair's research program includes the following priority thematic areas:

  • Gambling. 1) Population studies on social and commercial determinants of gambling; 2) Critical analysis of gender and gambling;
  • Online Gambling: 1) Critical development of prevention algorithms; 2) Critical analysis of prevention messages;
  • Gamification and hybridization of gambling, including the1) sStudy of mobile connected games.

Candidates may submit projects related to these areas or other topics related to gambling, provided that they take a critical sociological or public health perspective on gambling

Eligibility

Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree and be full-time students who have been admitted into a Master’s program. First year Master’s students will be given priority. Candidates must be supervised or co-supervised by Dr. Sylvia Kairouz, holder of the Research Chair on Gambling. International candidates are responsible for obtaining the proper documents for their stay in Québec.

Value 

The value of the fellowship is $12,000 and can be combined with any other source of funding.

Candidates must submit the following:

  • Research proposal (2 pages) in the field of gambling, elaborating on the research project, expected outcomes and deliverables;
  • Official transcripts;
  • Curriculum vitae;
  • Master’s program proof of registration;
  • Two reference letters.

Postdoctoral Fellowship on Gambling - 2026-2027

Description

The Research Chair on Gambling, funded by the FRQ-SC and the Fondation Mise sur toi, offers an annual postdoctoral fellowship. This fellowship aims to encourage young researchers in the field of gambling under the aegis of the Research Chair. The Chair's research program includes the following priority thematic areas:

  • Gambling. 1) Population studies on social and commercial determinants of gambling; 2) Critical analysis of gender and gambling;
  • Online Gambling: 1) Critical development of prevention algorithms; 2) Critical analysis of prevention messages;
  • Gamification and hybridization of gambling, including the study of mobile connected games.

Candidates may submit projects related to these or other topics connected to gambling, provided that these projects take a critical sociological or public health perspective.

Eligibility

Candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Submit a project that fall within the Research Chair’s thematic areas;
  • Have obtained their doctorate within the last five years at the time of application and have remained active in research;
  • Be registered as full-time postdoctorate students;
  • Be supervised or co-supervised by Dr. Sylvia Kairouz, Chairholder of the Research Chair on Gambling;
  • Commit to submitting two scientific papers in collaboration with Dr. Kairouz;
  • Commit to participating in at least one knowledge transfer activity;
  • International candidates are responsible for obtaining the necessary documentation for their stay in Quebec.
Value

The value of the fellowship is 40 000$ for a period of 12 months. This fellowship can be combined with another source of funding.

Application procedure

Candidates must submit the following documents:

  • Cover letter;
  • Description of the proposed research project (maximum 4 pages), including the following elements: 1) research question; 2) objectives; 3) brief literature review; 4) methodology; 5) expected results; 6) short bibliography; 7) timeline;
  • Two letters of recommendation from researchers who have personal knowledge of the candidate's research work;
  • A curriculum vitae including scholarships, awards, publications, presentations, and other experiences demonstrating scientific productivity, as well as complete contact information;
  • A copy of the doctoral degree or, if not available, a letter certifying that the thesis has been submitted;
  • In the case of a researcher holding a university position, provide proof of unpaid leave during the fellowship period;
