Special Call-out - Confronting "Pride": exploring queer resistance
What does a politic of queerness envision, need, and desire?
How does it mobilize, confront, act against, or live outside of the state & institutions?
-------
To align with Montreal’s Pride celebrations in August, the SHIFT Journal for Social Transformation is publishing a special edition, “Confronting Pride: exploring queer resistance". We are seeking personal essays, short stories, opinion pieces, and short research papers that speak that reflect the approaches of our funded partners:
- Imagining alternative ways of working and living together: thinking outside of existing systems and opening up new possibilities of living together (ex: alternative spaces, collectives)
- Fostering grassroots resistance to oppressive institutional structures: mobilizing residents, creating coalitions, and advocating against structures that create and reinforce injustice (ex: community defense, legal and policy advocacy, direct action)
- Building spaces for community solidarity and collective healing: working towards community well-being through carving out spaces to gather and feel united in taking care of one another (ex: mutual aid, healing and mental health)
- Working with and within institutions to create change: taking on institutions directly in an effort to reshape them (ex: institutional partnerships, creating resources to navigate complex systems)
Submissions should be between 750-1500 words, in either French or English. In-keeping with the SHIFT Centre’s objectives, we will prioritize pieces that speak to collaborations, solidarity-building, and systems change. As always, we prioritize submissions from our funded partners and collaborators. We plan to publish no more than 5 pieces.
Deadline for submission: July 28th 2025
