What is the IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the most widely accepted language test in the world for academic, immigration or professional purposes. 3.5 million IELTS tests were taken in 2018.

IELTS is accepted as evidence of English language proficiency by over 10,000 organizations worldwide. As well, IELTS is recognized as a secure, valid and reliable indicator of true-to-life ability to communicate in English for education, immigration and professional accreditation.

The academic and general tests measure the four key language skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing.

The IELTS is:

Important IELTS Test Day Information

Your Identity Documents

  • IELTS staff will check your identity upon your arrival. If you arrive without the correct ID you will not be able to take the test. Copies are NOT accepted.
  • Proof of identity: 
    • a valid Passport or Permanent Resident Card;
    • If you hold a Refugee Protection Claimant Document or Travel Document, please contact us
  • You must bring THE SAME proof of identity you used to apply for the test.
  • If your proof of identity has been sent for visa extensions, please delay applying for the IELTS test until it has been returned. 
  • As an additional security measure, IELTS staff will take a photograph of you before you sit the test. This photo will be used on your Test Report Form.
  • In Canada, you will also be asked to provide a finger scan

Items permitted in the test room:
  • Water in a clear plastic bottle with no label
  • Reading glasses, if needed (your case will be left in the cloakroom)
Items NOT permitted in the test room:
  • Cell phones, watches and other electronic devices
  • Individual headphones
  • All personal belongings must be left in the cloackroom
Items provided in the test room:
  • Pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners and tissues
