About the Chair
Mission & goals
The Research Chair on Gambling, its first in Quebec, was created in April 2012, at Concordia University, with the financial support of a joint venture between the Foundation Mise sur Toi & the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture (FRQ-SC) funding agency (2011).
The Chair’s mission is to take leadership, in close collaboration with its partners and collaborators, in the structuring of gambling risk prevention in Quebec. More precisely, it aims at:
- Developing and supporting gambling research projects on current and emerging issues
- Supporting and maintaining a critical mass of researchers in the gambling research network in Quebec
- Making a unique and significant contribution to the international network of gambling research
- Providing accurate information to the prevention networks
Research axes
The Chair’s work is structured around two axes.
Axis 1: Knowledge Development and Innovation
This axis aims to develop and support research projects that critically address emerging and innovative issues in gambling governance and gambling-related inequalities and harms (JHA), particularly in online gambling.
It also aims to generate scientific knowledge to better understand gambling practices, their impacts, and the changing social, technological, and regulatory contexts in which they arise. Our projects ultimately aim to support the prevention of gambling-related harms for individuals, their environment, and society.
This axis focuses on:
- Population approaches and social inequalities
- Digitalization and cyberspace
- Responsible gambling, governance and prevention
Axis 2: Co-construction of Knowledge
This axis focuses on co-constructing and sharing knowledge among researchers, clinicians, practitioners, institutions, and other stakeholders; strengthening partnerships across sectors and disciplines; and facilitating knowledge transfer to support its application in professional practice, research, and policy. A key pillar of this axis is to support the training of the next generation of researchers and professionals in critical perspectives on gambling.
This axis focuses on:
- Partnerships
- Knowledge transfer activities
- Training of emerging researchers
