Job Description

The Lead, Building Decarbonization Solutions (‘Lead’) position will guide and deliver the operations and core progress of several projects related to building decarbonization solutions being developed in the Next-Generation Cities Institute (‘NGCI’). The Lead will work with partners, provide scientific input, control quality and is responsible for the project management of multiple concurrent projects, with tasks including but not limited to project development, acquisition, and preparation of grants, research initiatives, and projects for NGCI. Additionally, the Lead will assist the Director and Management team with HR and financial planning, logistics, and administrative support for multiple projects in NGCI.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Develop research and work plans for multiple research projects and service contracts, develop methodologies for the work and actively contribute to research tasks on building decarbonization and district energy solutions.
  • Guide the Director and Management team with assigning work priorities for graduate students and other research personnel on multiple research projects and service contracts. Additionally, supervise and mentor junior research personnel as required.
  • Initiate and develop (strategic) proposals for building decarbonization solutions. Additionally, develop partnerships to design and support the implementation of renewable and district energy solutions.
  • Liaise with external stakeholders (private partners, municipalities, community organizations, other institutional community engagement offices, foundations, etc.) to acquire new applied research projects
  • Act as the primary point of contact between stakeholders and researchers to provide guidance and technical support for the planned activities.
  • Administer the funding budgets of projects and teams, including but not limited to planning and coordinating budget projection activities by adhering to financial forecasts and plans, budgeting for the development of events, workshops, and conferences.
  • Coordinate the creation and quality control of reports supported by research students, and assist with proposal writing for new federal, provincial or international grants to expand research activities.
  • Develop structures, processes, and KPIs for the evaluation of building decarbonization and renewable energy solutions projects.
  • Develop and review impact assessment and KPIs for project choices.
  • Coordinate and provide technical support for the design, commissioning, and optimization of building decarbonization and renewable energy solutions projects.
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students, as well as postdoctoral fellows attached to ongoing Building decarbonization and Community Energy projects.
  • Perform other duties in support of the Next-Generation Cities Institute.

 

Qualifications / Skills Required

  • Master’s Degree with five years of experience in building decarbonization. Project Management accreditation is considered an asset. 

  • Demonstrated project management experience and decision-making skills, coupled with the ability to establish and respond to priorities.

  • Proven team leader and team builder with the ability to motivate people and foster a positive team environment.

  • Academic background in buildings or energy engineering.

  • Broad experience in multi-project (and multi-stakeholder) coordination.

  • Knowledge in stakeholder (and donor) engagement and management.

  • Experience in obtaining external funding is desirable.

  • Superior interpersonal skills.

  • Fluency in English to express ideas effectively and to communicate clearly in complex situations; Fluency in spoken and written French.

  • Ability to multitask and work on a variety of projects concurrently.

  • Intermediate knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Programming is an asset.
