Job Description

Reporting to the Director, NGCI, with functional supervision by the Manager, Software Infrastructure – NGCI, the Backend Simulation Software Developer is accountable for the reliability, scalability, and performance of the backend simulation platform and its APIs, as well as comprehensive system documentation and smooth frontend-backend integration. Additionally, the incumbent focuses on backend design, while contributing to full stack development and supporting cross-institutional collaboration through stable interfaces and clear documentation.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Extend and enhance backend simulation capabilities to meet evolving needs in built environment and sustainable mobility; improve performance, reliability, and scalability.

  • Support the overall design of the urban simulation backend and integrate algorithms and third-party tools into the broader software framework.

  • Design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs and data-exchange formats (JSON/XML), ensuring secure, efficient integration with diverse tools and stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with frontend teams, domain experts, researchers, and stakeholders to gather requirements and ensure seamless data exchange and integration.

  • Provide guidance on code organization, best practices, and software development processes to researchers.

  • Conduct thorough testing and debugging; implement automated testing strategies to ensure accuracy of simulation results.

  • Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation (system architecture, API specs, user guides) accessible across domains and institutions.

  • Stay current with advancements in the domain; perform research to identify improvement opportunities and contribute innovative ideas.

  • Regularly report progress, priorities, risks, and resource needs to the supervisor; perform other duties as required.

Qualifications / Skills Required

  • Enrolled in a credited graduate or PhD program at the University and registered in at least one (1) course or have Continuing-In-Program or Time Limit Extension status and are not currently assessed as being in failed or conditional academic standing. 

  • Have never been found guilty of academic misconduct at the University.

  • Proficiency in Python, Java, or C++, with strong backend frameworks, simulation software, and API development knowledge.

  • Familiarity with databases, SQLAlchemy, data modeling, Flask, and Linux Nginx is advantageous.

  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing APIs for system integration; strong understanding of RESTful architectures and data exchange formats (JSON, XML) and API security practices.

  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical thinking, attention to detail, and ability to ensure reliability in simulation systems.

  • Strong teamwork and communication skills; ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences.

  • Enthusiasm for continuous learning and keeping up with new technologies and industry trends.

  • Experience in university research environments or multi-institutional research software platforms is a plus.

  • Fluency in English to express ideas effectively and to communicate clearly in complex situations; Intermediate level in spoken and written French.
