Mr. Chancellor, I have the honour to present to you André Bazergui, engineer, educator, scientist, university administrator. His leadership, academic integrity and community involvement have played a major part in the development of École Polytechnique, today one of Canada's finest engineering schools, celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.
A graduate in Mechanical Engineering in 1963, Dr. Bazergui recently completed eight heady years at the helm of École Polytechnique as Director-General. His professional relationship with the school began in 1966 when he joined the faculty as assistant professor upon receiving his PhD in Applied Mechanics from the University of Sheffield, in England, while on an Athlone Fellowship.

He has been active in professional associations, participating in a number of committees for the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Society for Experimental Mechanics, where I had the pleasure of meeting him for the first time. In 1987, he received the G.H. Duggan Medal of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering and was made a fellow of the Society in 1990. He is also a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada.
Mr. Chancellor, Dr. Bazergui has received several awards for his teaching excellence from both his students and his peers. His research expertise is in the area of Experimental Stress Analysis and Pressure Vessels, with particular emphasis on bolted joints and gasket behavior. He was the founder of the Tightness Testing Research Laboratory at École Polytechnique, a world leader in gasket characterization. He heads a research team funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council.
M. Bazergui est membre du Conseil du Centre de recherche industrielle du Québec depuis 1993 et en est devenu le vice-président depuis 1997. II est membre actif du Conseil de la Conférence des recteurs et des principaux des universités du Québec. He has also been an active participant in the work of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada and of the Corporate Higher-Education Forum.
Actuellement en sabbatique administrative de l'Ecole Polytechnique, M. Bazergui a joint, comme directeur de développement stratégique, la firme Innovitech Inc., consultants spécialisés en applications d'information et de communication technologique.
Soucieux de l'importance d'attirer de jeunes talents en sciences et en génie, M. Bazergui a présidé le Festival des sciences de la Commission des écoles catholiques de Montréal; en reconnaissance à son implication le Conseil a nommé le prix André Bazergui, la récompense décernée chaque année aux équipes gagnantes des catégories écoles élémentaires et écoles secondaires.
La sensibilité de M. Bazergui aux besoins des plus démunis de la société, l'a poussé à investir temps et énergie dans la campagne de Centraide. Il s'est impliqué également comme membre du comité de la campagne de financement dans la levée de fonds pour le nouveau théâtre Espace-go, une des plus belles installations culturelles du boul. Saint-Laurent.
André Bazergui est marié depuis 34 ans avec Maria Pàlffy. Ensemble, ils ont élevé trois enfants et sont maintenant d'heureux grands-parents pour leurs deux petites-filles.
