Mr. Vice-Chancellor, I have the honour to present to you Lise Bissonnette, distinguished journalist and advocate of higher education.
En tant qu'université, nous sommes particulièrement heureux d'honorer Lise Bissonnette, qui pendant sa remarquable carrière professionnelle a toujours su porter un intérêt soutenu à l'enseignement supérieur.
Elle a fréquenté les universités de Montréal, de Strasbourg et de Paris, ou elle a étudié les sciences pédagogiques et s'est spécialisée en gestion de l'enseignement supérieur. Elle a ensuite occupé des postes d'enseignante et d'administratrice à l'Université de Montréal ainsi qu'à l'Université du Québec à Montréal.
De cette carrière d'universitaire, Lise Bissonnette est passée à celle de journaliste, qu'elle n'a pas manqué d'exercer avec brio. Lorsqu'elle s'est jointe au quotidien Le Devoir en 1974, on lui a confié le dossier éducation; par la suite elle est devenue correspondante parlementaire du Devoir, d'abord à l'Assemblée nationale du Québec, ensuite aux Communes d'Ottawa. A partir de 1978, elle devient éditorialiste. Lise Bissonnette s'est toujours distinguée par son intelligence vive, sa rigueur inébranlable et son professionnalisme infaillible. Par conséquent, huit ans seulement après ses débuts au Devoir, elle est nommée Rédactrice en chef, devenant non seulement la personne la plus jeune, mais, en plus, la première femme à occuper ce poste prestigieux.
Lise Bissonnette interrupted her writing career in 1980 to take a one-year study leave to work as a Senior Associate with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in New York, where she specialized in Québec-U.S. relations. It was when she returned to Montreal the following year that she became Editor in Chief of Le Devoir. She resigned her position at the newspaper earlier this year to expand her professional and personal horizons. She remains an Associate Editor, however, and continues to write regular columns for the newspaper.
Throughout her career, Lise Bissonnette has played an active role in furthering higher education, in general, and in supporting Concordia University, in particular. The University can take great pride, therefore, in recognizing her achievements and dedication.
Mr. Vice-Chancellor, it is a privilege to present to you, on behalf of the Senate and by the authority of the Board of Governors, Lise Bissonnette, that you may confer on her the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
