Research interests
Daniel Dagenais is member of the Collectif Société and on the editorial board of the journal Cahiers Société (a journal and research group founded by the late Michel Freitag). My work can be divided into three domains of reflection: a strong concern for social theory, namely the meaning of the renewal of sociological theory from the 1980s onwards (he edited: Hannah Arendt, le totalitarisme et le monde contemporain, PUL, 2003), including theories of identity. I am also concerned with the transformation of the family institution (see my book, The (Un)Making of the Modern Family, UBC Press, 2007).My research also focuses on contemporary suicide (centrally, youth suicide). This brought me to try and distinguish, more theoretically, historical semantics of suicide from the Ancient world to the present. I teach Introduction to society, Contemporary sociological theory, The Family, and the Sociology of suicide.
