Concordia is among Canada’s top universities once again.

In the 2018 edition of the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities, also known as the National Taiwan University (NTU) Ranking, the university placed among the best Canadian institutions in one field and four subjects. Concordia ranked 10th in Canada in engineering, as well as sixth in electrical engineering, seventh in civil engineering and computer science, and eighth in mechanical engineering.

The university moved up four spots to 283 in engineering worldwide, and maintained its position in the 301-350 category in social sciences. Concordia also ranked in materials science and, for the first time ever, joined the world’s top 350 universities for chemical engineering.

The NTU Ranking employs bibliometric methods to analyze and rank the scientific paper performances of the world’s best 800 educational institutions.

“Because the NTU rankings have a very particular focus on research publication impact in selected fields, we should take pride in this recognition of Concordia’s increased global reach,” says Graham Carr, provost and vice-president of Academic Affairs.

More rankings success

Concordia was also featured prominently in the recently released 2018 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), commonly known as the Shanghai Rankings. The university placed in 16 subjects, up from 11 last year, including one in natural sciences, eight in engineering and seven in social sciences.

Concordia’s newly ranked subjects include:

  • Mathematics (301-400)
  • Energy science and engineering (401-500)
  • Transportation science and technology (101-150)
  • Economics (401-500)
  • Communication (151-200)
  • Psychology (201-300)

These subjects join 10 others that had placed in 2017: mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, automation and control, telecommunication engineering, computer science and engineering, civil engineering, education, business administration, finance, and management.

In addition, Concordia ranked in the 601-700 category in the 2018 edition of the ARWU out of more than 1,500 universities. Initially compiled and published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the independent research organization ShanghaiRanking Consultancy now compiles the annual results.
