Alumnus and seasoned Concordia administrator D’Arcy Ryan (MA 01, MBA 09) has been named the university’s director of Recreation and Athletics.

Ryan has occupied various leadership roles at Concordia over the last 18 years and brings a student-focused approach to his new position. Most recently, as director of Residence Life, his stewardship was central in doubling the number of residence spaces on campus and improving the overall experience of living at Concordia.

Since January 2017, Ryan has served as interim director of Recreation and Athletics where he was active in the operational review of the unit. “In short order, D’Arcy was able to strengthen relationships with existing university departments and collaborate effectively with coaching and recreation staff,” says deputy provost Lisa Ostiguy.

“This, combined with his strong connection to students, makes him a natural fit for the position.”

Also notable in his tenure was the introduction of a new online ticketing system for events as well as an automated system for eligibility verification for varsity athletes. Such initiatives are part of a broader mandate to ensure that Concordia’s Department of Recreation and Athletics reflects the values of a next-generation university.

Ryan’s first priorities will be to improve the in-game experience at Stingers events, examine all aspects of varsity programs and enhance the recreation offerings for Concordia’s student body.

'We are all Stingers at heart'

Ryan knows firsthand what it means to be a student athlete at Concordia.

“I was part of the Stingers rugby team when I was a student in the mid-90s. Playing a varsity sport was life-changing and I want as many students as possible to have the same experience."

Ryan also wants to ensure that all students enjoy the benefits of recreation on campus.

“We all know that sports and exercise helps with overall well-being, better grades and increased engagement. Whether it’s playing intramural sports or taking advantage of Le Gym and the PERFORM Centre Gym, this is what I call being a Stinger at heart.”
