The Philosophy Department is pleased to announce that Michèle Martin, BA Honours student in Philosophy, is the winner of the 2020 Sheila Mason Bursary.

The Sheila Mason Bursary is administered by the Students of Philosophy Association's Inclusivity Project.

It honours the work of Dr. Sheila Mason and her extensive contributions to the Department of Philosophy as Professor and Academic Advisor from 1969 to 2015. For over 40 years, Dr. Mason amplified the voices of women and minorities through her work on feminist theory, care, and ethics.

The Inclusivity Project's Soline Van de Moortele writes:

On behalf of the Inclusivity Project decision-making board, I would like to formally congratulate Michèle Martin on their exceptional application and essay regarding the intersection of social experience and the status of people with disabilities in society, and the impact of social dynamics in policy making regarding their health. The essay touches on something which is not widely recognized, and discusses the oppression of people with disabilities while giving concrete possibility for action. Martin is incredibly deserving of this award, not only for the quality of the paper but in their overall active engagement with social justice matters. At an Inclusivity Project event hosted on March 6th which focused on institutional discrimination in education, Martin generously offered to speak on their experience as a student facing a multitude of discriminatory practices from the University. This deeply touched many students, as well as myself, and I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to feature such a powerful talk. I hope they will continue to do work on these necessary matters, and will continue to be awarded the recognition they deserve.
