Led by Cathy Richardson and Allan Wade, this workshop is designed to inform analysis and practice in relation to people who have experienced interpersonal and state violence. This approach has been helpful for counsellors, social workers, human service professionals, activists, researchers, legal and medical professionals and anyone supporting people who have been targeted by violence.

Aimed towards anyone interested in helping others recover from violence, racism, prejudice and adversity through the reaffirmation of human dignity and creating positive social responses to those who have been harmed.

You will learn the fundamentals of response-based practice including:

  • Identifying the importance of dignity & resistance
  • Understanding violence & responses in context
  • Receiving a framework of analysis for practice & research
  • The importance of accurate representations of violence
  • The difference between responses and effects
  • Interviewing
  • Discourse analysis of reports, media, psychological reports & professional documents
  • Decolonization of social services
  • Working ethically with Indigenous communities
     

About Allan Wade

Allan Wade is a therapist in private practice and a founder of response-based practice, a dignity-informed, social justice approach to helping people recover from interpersonal and state violence. He is the recipient of a practice award in the E.U. and in British Columbia.

About Cathy Richardson

Cathy Richardson/Kinewesquao is a co-founder of the Centre for Response-Based Practice, a psychotherapist and First Peoples Studies Program Director. She is the recipient of the 2019 Indigenous Practice Award of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.
