While Campus Sustainability Month may have come to an end, there's still a ton to celebrate and engage with:

3 university initiatives (UNIVER/CITY 2030, the Student Sustainability Ambassadors Program, and the Concordia University Centre for Creative Reuse) were shortlisted for International Green Gown Awards, which recognize exceptional sustainability projects undertaken by higher-education institutions worldwide. In partnership with World Wildlife Fund Canada (WWF-Canada), Concordia also obtained the Living Campus certification for its commitment to sustainability, conservation and creating a positive impact on the environment. The university is one of only 10 Canadian institutions to be certified.

And finally, students, faculty, staff, and community members will have the chance to weigh in on the process of designing the next iteration of Concordia's Sustainability Action Plan on November 6 on Loyola Campus and November 13 on Sir George Williams Campus. Make sure to register!

Concordia caps off Campus Sustainability Month with a slew of awards and certifications

After successfully wrapping up its fourth annual Campus Sustainability Month in October, Concordia’s sustainability efforts continue to draw local, national and international attention.

The month-long festivities saw students, faculty and staff come out in droves to attend more than 30 events on the Sir George Williams and Loyola campuses, as well as online.

Programming highlights included the return of the sustainability fair, a panel highlighting sustainability research across the university’s four faculties and — just in time for Halloween — a sustainable pumpkin carving workshop.

A student-led group from Concordia’s Faculty of Fine Arts earns top environmental prize from Forces AVENIR

Concordia’s Sustainable Studios has earned the top Environmental prize at this year’s Forces AVENIR awards. The award was presented at a ceremony in Quebec City on October 1.

Forces AVENIR recognizes, honours and promotes student involvement in projects that contribute to developing conscious, responsible, active and resilient citizens. Winning the top honours was a huge boon to the Ceramics program students behind the project, says Teresa Dorey, a graduate student in the program and the Sustainable Studios director.

How alumna Karine Balé fuses finance with sustainability

For Karine Balé, one of those passions was sustainability. She was part of Concordia’s Office of Sustainability’s Student Sustainability Ambassadors Program, which provides students with experiences to support a greener and more resilient campus culture.

As a member of the program, Balé developed an interactive, open-source map of Concordia’s sustainability ecosystem — a university first.

A vital tool that helps visualize sustainability leadership across Concordia’s two campuses, the initiative was nominated for a Student Leadership Award by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.

Concordia also named Balé a Sustainability Champion for her innovation in 2023

The brand’s creative and thoughtful use of seat belts from Quebec scrap yards, used Air Canada airline seats and regenerated fishing nets have helped position it as one of the most sustainably advanced brands in the world.

Emissions: Did you know? If Bay Street were a country, it’d be the fifth biggest climate polluter in the world. John Woodside writes that in just one year, Toronto’s largest financial institutions financed fossil fuel companies to the tune of $1.4 trillion. That money was used to expand oil and gas projects around the world, generating over a billion tonnes of climate pollution. In fact, if Bay Street were a country, it would be the fifth biggest emitter in the world, behind only the United States, India, China and Russia — and responsible for nearly double Canada’s entire pollution in a given year.
