#CUpride: a bulletin for Concordia volunteers

Dear [FIRST NAME],

It has truly been a remarkable year for Concordia. As you scroll through our latest #CUpride newsletter, I hope you rejoice in the many ways our community continues to raise the bar.

To the many volunteers who give momentum to the Campaign for Concordia: Next-Gen Now, please accept my heartfelt gratitude and thanks. Your selflessness and dedication makes a tremendous difference in the lives of our students, some of whom recently gathered with President Graham Carr to record a special thank-you video for National Philanthropy Day.

All the best and warmest wishes for the holiday season,

Fundraising successes

Our first-ever in-person #GivingTuesday programming on November 29 generated 1,155 donations totalling more than $439,000 to 88 different designations, including Concordia Stingers teams, the Student Success Centre and the Student Emergency and Food Fund.

Concordia faculty and staff were recognized at a special Giving Tuesday event.

The Concordia EPIC Used Book Giveaway raised more than $3,000 for students on October 12 and 13. Some 15,000 books found new homes.

Gift recognition

The generosity of our donors made 2022 a special year for the Campaign for Concordia. University Advancement recently celebrated a number of major gifts with in-person announcements and multimedia communications tactics.

December 8: Advancement announced a $500,000 gift from the John Dobson Foundation — co-directed by Formula Growth executives Randall Kelly, BComm 78, and Ari Kiriazidis — to help research-based entrepreneurs navigate the startup journey through programs supported by Concordia’s District 3 Innovation Hub and V1 Studio.

November 18: A gift of $1.3 million from Power Corporation of Canada was celebrated with a reception at Loyola Campus’s PERFORM Centre and a pre-game puck-drop ceremony at Ed Meagher Arena with Power Corporation’s Peter Kruyt, BComm 78.

October 11: Major donor J. Sebastian van Berkom, BComm 69, LLD 17, increased his support for the Van Berkom Investment Management Program with a gift of $1.2 million to support student scholarships. The gift was celebrated at an on-campus reception with more than 75 guests in attendance.

September 28: A gift of $812,000 from Lallemand Inc. to support Concordia’s Bioprocessing Centre through graduate scholarships and fellowships was celebrated at an in-person event at Loyola Campus’s Applied Science Hub.

Fostering pride and engagement

John Molson School Day inspired students, faculty and alumni alike on November 22. As part of the special celebration, four visionary John Molson standouts discussed how they hope to harness the power of business to tackle some of society’s most urgent challenges.

The namesake benefactor of the Gina Cody School — Gina Cody, MEng 81, PhD 89 — was named Outstanding Major Donor for 2022 by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Quebec at a ceremony in November. The honour was bestowed on the strength of Cody’s transformative $15-million gift to Concordia in 2018 and overall support for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education — particularly for women and students from marginalized and underprivileged backgrounds.

Concordia’s Loyola Medal ceremony was held on September 15 in Winnipeg with more than 150 virtual guests in attendance. The Honourable Murray Sinclair, LLB MSC IPC, former senator, judge and chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, became the 23rd Loyola Medal recipient in Concordia’s history.

Honorary doctorates

As part of spring convocation celebrations, honorary doctorates were commemorated at dinners organized and hosted on June 5 and 8: Guy Cormier, LLD 22; Jennifer Flanagan, DSc 20; Julie Gichuru, LLD 22; Lady Mireille Gillings, BA 91; DSc 22; Margie Gillis, DFA 20; Olivette Otele, LLD 22; and Nathalie Petrowski, BA 76, DLitt 22.

Three additional honorary doctorate recipients were celebrated in October at an event organized by the Office of the President and Advancement to honour: David Fung, DSc 20; Reshma Shetty, DSc 22; and Fibbie Tatti, LLD 20.

Next-gen publications

Concordia University Magazine, Momentum and our monthly newsletters highlighted Campaign for Concordia milestones and successes extensive coverage throughout the year.

Commemorative books produced by Advancement in 2022 celebrated two impactful donors: J. Sebastian van Berkom, BComm 69, LLD 17, and the late Ned Goodman, LLD 97.

Engaging the next generation of leaders

The Concordia 50 Under 50 — an annual list of alumni trailblazers in business, the arts, philanthropy and more — was unveiled on July 11. The achievements of our latest cohort were promoted on social media with related videos and news stories, and were celebrated in person at Montreal’s Atwater Club on November 28.
