SHIFT Centre for Social Transformation

May 2026

Although you can never be too sure in Montreal, it seems safe to say that we’ve graduated from winter to a season in which it’s comfortable and pleasant to be outside. Stuck inside, in our more-curated spaces, we can fall prey to an illusion of control, which gets reinforced by our individual experiences online. We have become more connected than ever, but connected to what? Connected to whom? We go down our rabbit holes, form parasocial relationships, get swept in online drama; the phrase go touch grass comes to mind. It’s often a form of mockery, and yet...

Outside of these walls, beyond the screens, birds are welcoming the warmth of spring.

In an environment full of algorithmically-generated stimulus, filled with predatory appeals to consume more, there is some level of defiance in the act of going outside to touch grass, whether alone or with other humans. It’s a step in a transformational direction that requires us to share physical space: to be uncomfortable together, in conflict together, grieving together, building alternative futures together...

There’s an inimitable power in sharing space, whether with the birds, the trees, the humans—all of whom are inextricably connected.

Pathways to Narrative-Building:

Journalism, storytelling, and mobilizing media

In the background: Hundreds of red, blue, green, and yellow chaotically forming a murmuration. In the foreground are 3 circular headshots of speakers Rachel Gilmore (Bubble Pop Media), Danièle-Jocelyne Otou-Nguini (New Room Group), and Savannah Stewart (The Rover).

Tuesday, May 5 @ 12-1:30 p.m., LB 145 (SHIFT Centre)

In a moment when information and misinformation are moving at a break-neck pace and trust in media institutions is dwindling, how can we better challenge dominant narratives and confront current power structures? Against this backdrop, the SHIFT Centre is inviting award-winning journalist Rachel Gilmore, social impact leader Danièle-Jocelyne Otou-Nguini, and managing editor of The Rover Savannah Stewart for a free skill-share event on building narratives for social change.

Our interactive skill-share will center on practical approaches to wielding communications for social transformation, in an effort to better equip us to speak truth to power through our stories.

How to say goodbye

Photograph of two individuals sitting and talking in front of an audience

As much as we try to prepare for goodbye, we can’t predict the movement of things underneath us and how that movement impacts our planning. As she leaves her position at SHIFT, Richenda Grazette reflects on what she's learned about preparing for, thinking through, and saying goodbye through SHIFT's "Sunsetting Process". To her, goodbyes are an ongoing journey: the best we can do is do it together all the way along, be transparent and honest, and keep a healthy balance of grief and gratitude.

Comment veux-tu dire au revoir?

Photograph of two individuals sitting and talking in front of an audience
