Concordia Olympians


Concordia has been well represented at the Olympics throughout the years. Here is handy reference of Concordians who have gone to the Olympics, courtesy of Nancy Marrelli, BA 84, Concordia Archivist Emerita.

His Excellency, Pedro R. Suinaga, L BA 26,was a legendary player for Loyola College football teams in the 1920s. In 1928 he played for the Mexican Olympic soccer team.

Warren “Monty” Montabone, BA 28, represented Canada in track events at the 1924 Paris Olympics and the 1928 Amsterdam games.He held the Canadian record for hurdles for 58 years until it was broken in 1983.

Frank Shaughnessy Jr., BA 32, won a bronze medal with the 1936 United States Olympic hockey team and served in a variety of capacities with the Canadian Olympic Association.

Paul Levesque, BA 57, was a member of the Canadian National Bobsled Team from 1962 to 1967. In 1967 he switched to luge and became player-coach of the Canadian National Team. He continued in this role for the Canadian team that competed at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble.

Richard Pound, BA 63, was a member of the Sir George Williams University swim team in the early 1960s and swam for Canada at the Rome Olympics in 1960. He went on to become a vice-president of the International Olympic Committee and head of the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Jim Corsi, BEng 76, is a celebrated Concordia athlete who won many major awards and championships during his Concordia years in the mid-1970s. He was part of the coaching staff for Italy’s hockey team at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin.

Kenneth Lowe, BSc 78, played hocked at Loyola in the early 1970s. He was also equipment manager and student trainer and by 1979 he was head of the Stingers athletic therapy centre. He served as the trainer with Team Canada at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.

Garry Kallos, BSc 80, was on the Concordia wrestling team from 1978 to ’84. He wrestled for Canada at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

Lawrence Holmes, BA 81, MA 83, PhD 86, represented Canada in wrestling at the 1984 Los Angeles and 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Andy Borodow, attendee 87, competed for Concordia’s wrestling team in the late 1980s. He competed for Canada’s Olympic wrestling team at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta games.

Clark Davis, attendee, was a Concordia student who won two national championships in wrestling at the 95- and 100-kg levels. He competed for Canada at the 1984 Los Angeles and 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Victor Zilberman, GrDip 85, began to coach wrestling at Concordia in the 1970s. He has been a member of the Canadian coaching staff at six Olympic Games, including this year in London.

Hercules Kyvelos, attendee 96, was a marketing student at Concordia in 1995-96 and competed for Canada in Atlanta in 1996 as a boxer.

Caroline Ouellette, attendee, played women’s hockey for the Stingers while at Concordia during the 1990s. She won a gold medal with Canada’s women’s hockey team at the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City in 2002 and again in Turin in 2006.

Julie Rocheleau-Beaumann, attendee, was a psychology student at Concordia who competed for Canada in the Seoul Olympics in 1988 in the women’s 100-metre hurdles event. She received a two-year suspension from competition in 1989 but went on to represent Switzerland at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. 

Sylvia Sweeney, attendee 77, played on the women’s basketball team when she studied at Concordia in the mid-1970s. She also played on Canada’s Olympic basketball team in 1976 and 1984.

Doug Yeats, BEng 98, competed in wrestling for the Stingers and went on to represent Canada at four summer Olympics: Montreal 1976, Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988 and Barcelona 1992. He was also named to the Canadian team in 1980 but Canada boycotted the Moscow games, so the team did not compete.

Henry Hering, BEng 98, represented Canada in men’s rowing at the 1992 Barcelona games, 1996 Atlanta games and 2000 Sydney games.

Giulio Zardo, attendee, was a Concordia student when he competed with Pierre Leuders in the bobsledding competition at the Salt Lake City games in 2002.

Rosey Edeh, MA 02, set world records in track and is a three-time Olympian: Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996.

Waneek Horn-Miller, attendee, studied at Concordia for a year while training in Montreal with the national women’s water polo team. She competed with the Canadian team at the Sydney games in 2000.

Thérèse Brisson

Thérèse Brisson, BSc 89, played for the Stingers women’s hockey team from 1986 to 1990. She won a silver medal with Canada’s national women’s hockey team at the Nagano Olympics in 1998 and a gold medal in Salt Lake City in 2002.

Karyn Bye, GrDip 95, and Cammi Granato, attendee 97, both played for the Stingers women’s hockey team while at Concordia during the mid-1990s.They were members of the U.S. hockey teams that won gold at the Nagano Olympics in 1998 and silver at the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002.

Cecilia Anderson, attendee, played on the Stingers’ women’s hockey team and represented Sweden at the 2006 Turin games, where her team won a silver medal.

David Zilberman, BA 07, competed in wrestling for the Stingers. He was on Canada’s Olympic wrestling squad at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. 

Rob Dawson, BA 90, former Stinger wrestler, represented Canada in wrestling at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Martine Dugrenier

David Tremblay is a current Stinger wrestler and is representing Canada at the London 2012 Olympic games.

Sergio Pessao is currently studying Finance at the John Molson School of Business and is competing for Canada in Judo at the London 2012 games.

Martine Dugrenier, BSc 02, GrDip 08, wrestled with the Canadian team in Beijing in 2008 and is at the London 2012 games.

Julie Healy, BSc 83, played field hockey and women's hockey at Concordia and is currently a Stingers hockey coach. She is on the Canadian Olympic Committee as manager of team services at London 2012.

Carol Assalian, BSc 89, played women's basketball at Concordia and is attending the London 2012 games as executive director of the Canadian Olympic Committee.

Tamara Medwidsky, GrDip 00, MBA 03, is a former Stinger wrestler and is attending the London 2012 games as executive director of the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association.
