OCT. 2-6: From sleep workshops to shyness clinics — explore Concordia's campus resources at Mental Health Awareness Week

Juggling academic commitments with work, relationships and a social life can sometimes be overwhelming. Thankfully there are a slew of resources on campus to help you manage your mental well-being. And there’s an easy way to discover them.

From October 2 to 6, Concordia will host a series of events for Mental Health Awareness Week. The activities are designed to help students and staff alike get to know the services available to them, and the people on hand to help.

“It is about equipping students to be the best and happiest versions of themselves,” says Gaya Arasaratnam, director of Concordia’s Campus Wellness and Support Services.

“The events are open to all students regardless of their program, faculty, or year of study. I encourage students to drop by, check out the events, and get to know the resources available to them.”

Alexis Lahorra is a fourth-year student and president of Jack.org Concordia, a student chapter of the national non-profit youth mental health organization.

“Back to school and life changes can be stressful, it's important for students to know that they don't have to go through it alone,” she says. 

“Even if they’re not in crisis or feeling down, I encourage students to learn about the many resources on campus that can help.”

Bibliotherapy

The Career Resource Centre has numerous print, electronic and audio-visual materials to support mental well-being.

These are excellent resources that can help you achieve your utmost when it comes to your personal growth and development. Drop in to peruse the collection — or borrow a book!

Workshop: insomnia and poor sleep

Sleep is essential for optimal health – not to mention good academic performance. But most students don’t get nearly enough. This workshop will help you assess your sleeping habits, and find out how to get a better night’s rest.

WHEN: Tuesday, October 3, noon to 1:15 p.m.
WHERE: Room 200, Guy-De Maisonneuve Building (1550 De Maisonneuve W.), Sir George Williams Campus


Ask Dr. Jeff Levitt

Staff and faculty: are you concerned about the mental health of your students? Do you worry about how mental wellness impacts the classroom experience?

This is an opportunity to speak with psychologist Jeff Levitt, manager of Mental Health Clinical Services at Concordia.

Healthy YOU at CU

Health Services’ weekly wellness information table provides expert advice on healthy living. Health promotion specialists will be on hand to answer your questions.

WHEN: Wednesday, October 4, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
WHERE: Atrium, J.W. McConnell Building (1400 De Maisonneuve W.), Sir George Williams Campus


Shyness clinic

At this clinic, you will learn about shyness and ways to overcome it. The goal is to help you to feel more connected to the people in your life, and more comfortable meeting new people, talking to your teachers or finding a job.

The clinic runs over eight weeks. Please note that registration will be closed after the first session. Participants are encouraged to attend all eight sessions.

WHEN: Wednesdays, October 4 until November 22, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
