Concordia’s Instagram curation program is now in its second year.

#CUseenby captures the spirit of the university through photos of both campuses, people, programs, activities and experiences. Those following the Concordia Instagram account can experience the university through the eyes of those who study here.

For the beginning of the fall term, #CUseenby will be run by four Welcome Crew student mentors, one from each of Concordia’s faculties.

Follow their Instagram journey via the #CUseenby hashtag as they focus their lenses on campus resources available, highlight student life at Concordia and celebrate Montreal, the world’s best student city!

The student mentors are: Ben Compton from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Cindy Chen from the John Molson School of Business (JMSB), Rachel Rammal from the Faculty of Arts and Science and Shakti Murugesan from the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science (ENCS).

We sat down with them to find out about their favourite Instagram accounts, why they chose to be student curators, what they hope to showcase, and how they go about creating engaging content.

Why did you want to be Concordia’s Instagram curator?

Shakti Murugesan: Images matter. This is a great opportunity to capture and share some resources and activities around campus, and to inspire our followers and connect them with stories and places. Instagram is an expressive medium that helps me share some of my own experiences as a student at Concordia.

Ben Compton: I love the simplicity of Instagram and I enjoy getting insight into other people’s lives. I also like that Concordia’s account prioritizes students’ experiences.

Cindy Chen: It’s a great opportunity to explore Montreal. There are so many fantastic moments to capture in the city, so why not share them through Instagram?

Rachel Rammal: I often find myself mindlessly walking through the halls of the university, distracted by all the sounds, visuals and students around me (we are over 46,000, after all). I want to use this opportunity to become more mindful of my surroundings and truly appreciate the present moment.

What do you hope to do with the Concordia Instagram account?

BC: I hope to share some of the things I love about the Concordia campus and the Faculty of Fine Arts.

CC: I’d like to share some pictures about my student life at Concordia, as well as snapshots to show the beauty of Montreal.

SM: I would like to share my stories and the places I visit around campus. I always take pictures of my surroundings. Instagram is an interesting way to share the diversity that exists at Concordia.

What are three or four of your favourite Instagram accounts?

BC:

  • @saintrecords - Solange Knowles shares her artistic process, fashion sense, concert footage and social life.
  • @mmuseumm - “A natural history museum about the modern world” in New York City. They post interesting objects, consumer products and everyday innovation from around the world.
  • @emmaportner - Emma Portner is one of the most exciting contemporary dancers coming out of Canada. She shares rehearsal footage, travel experience and thoughts on dance and life. And she’s from my hometown of Ottawa!

RR:

SM:

  • @mikeescamilla - Exploring abandoned aqueducts, skydiving.
  • @dcmism - Toronto-based artist’s bizarre world.
  • @thesartorialist - Photographer Scott Schuman documents fashion and design with striking photographs.

What tips do you have for Concordia students who are looking to make their Instagram accounts better, or just take great photos?

BC: Document everything. Everyday life is so interesting.

RR: Tell your story, have a consistent theme and have fun with it by being yourself and being genuine! Warm meals should never be sacrificed for Instagram fame (in other words, tone down the #foodpics).

SM: Taking good photos and sharing them is a great way to connect with people and make new friends.
