Just as the poppy has become the recognized symbol for Remembrance Day, organizers of the Concordia Remembers initiative are hoping a new art competition will engage and inspire graduate students to create works of art that promote a vision of peace and contemplation.

“Works of art have long been used to commemorate major world events and to serve as a place of respite or an opportunity for reflection,” explains Clarence Epstein, Concordia’s director of Special Projects and Cultural Affairs. “This new competition invites graduate students to complement traditional Remembrance Day symbols with new concepts that resonate with them.”

The call for large-scale image-based work is open only to Concordia graduate students enrolled in the Master of Fine Arts in Studio Arts, in any of the seven disciplines. The artist whose work is selected will receive a prize of $500. The competition closes March 3, 2014.

“Artists are invited to submit works that address the function of memory, invite retrospection, and investigate the role of memorial through images or a series of images for reproduction and presentation at Concordia,” explains FOFA Gallery Director jake moore.

Competition guidelines

Works must be image-based, and ready for reproduction in large-format digital printing. The submissions will be juried by a committee that will include jake moore, and representatives from the Office of the President, as well as selected specialists from the greater Montreal community.

Up to four finalists will be shortlisted and their image-based works will be posted online by the FOFA Gallery. The selected work of art will be reproduced and installed on the FOFA Gallery Image Grid in early October 2014 and remain on exhibit until the end of November 2014. The Image Grid is located on the east wall of the FOFA Gallery courtyard.

Interested MFA candidates who have questions or would like more information can contact the FOFA Gallery director at jake.moore@concordia.ca. Read more about the technical requirements here.
