Thanks to an endless stream of book lovers, $8,896.50 was raised at the 16th annual Concordia Used Book Fair. Held October 1 and 2, the fair supports Multi-faith Chaplaincy’s Student Emergency and Food Fund as well as Concordia scholarships.

Organizer Susan Hawke and the team of volunteers offer their thanks to supporting departments: Distribution Services, Custodial Services, the bookstore, the International Students’ Office, the LIVE Centre, Security, Conference Services, Recreation and Athletics and the Office of the Vice-President, Services.

Congratulations to fine arts student Alisi Telengut, who received an honourable mention for the Best Canadian Student Animation Award at the Ottawa International Animation Festival in late September.

Author and alumnus Rawi Hage, BFA (Photography) 98, is a finalist for the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize with his new book Carnival. The winner will be announced on Nov. 7.

It’s Hage's third time as a finalist: Cockroach and De Niro’s Game were nominated as well, with the latter winning the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.

Yamantaka // Sonic Titan, the band featuring alumnae Alaska B and Ruby Kato-Attwood, has been shortlisted for the 2012 Polaris Music Prize.

Two Studio Arts alumni have won competitions for high-profile public art installations.

Nicolas Baier, whose large-scale mural graces the Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Arts Integrated Complex, created a photo sculpture for the 50th anniversary of Montreal’s Place Ville Marie. Autoportrait is found on the building’s esplanade.

Michel de Broin recently won a public art competition launched by Germany’s parliament. His 20-metre-wide artwork, titled Mehr Licht (More Light), will be installed in a government-building courtyard.
