Dear colleagues,

We extend a warm welcome to our faculty and staff members as we finalize preparations for a busy and productive fall term.

A new term brings a fresh start and we look forward to working with all of you to ensure that our students — both new and returning — are provided with opportunities that will support them in achieving academic success and experiencing the best that Concordia has to offer.

We have no indication that disruptions due to student protest action will occur, but in the event of a disruption, we will work with student leaders to keep the lines of communication open, and provide support to the deans, department chairs, faculty members and staff. Our Code of Rights and Responsibilities is the primary policy that guides our response to disruptions and outlines standards of conduct expected of all members of the university community.

Bill 78 carries legal implications for Concordia community

While violations of the code are handled internally and may involve hearings, the Quebec government’s Bill 78 (also known as Law 12) carries potential serious consequences for people who block access to facilities or disrupt classes. These include significant financial penalties that can be imposed by the government on individuals and associations, including students, faculty, staff members, student assocations and employee unions, who disobey its provisions.

That is why it is important for us to work together to ensure that we fully understand what is expected of us under this legislation. To this end, we are providing you with some frequently asked questions and background information on Bill 78. We encourage you to read this document thoroughly.

If you require additional information or have questions, please contact your dean’s office, or your immediate supervisor if you do not work in an academic unit.

Sincerely,

Bram Freedman
