Peter Stoett has a full, bright winter ahead of him. The professor and chair of Concordia’s Department of Political Science has been granted a Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Canada-US Relations at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. He will be spending four months in Washington, DC, starting in January 2012, conducting research for a project entitled Transborder Counter-Bioinvasion: Canada-US Policy Networks on Invasive Alien Species.

Stoett’s project will examine the policy context and possibilities for improved coordination on issues related to invasive alien species, which are plants and animals growing outside of their native areas. He will study legislative efforts, interview decision-makers and NGOs, and examine implementing agencies to determine ways to increase transborder co-operation and network development.

“It is with a great deal of pleasure that I welcome Dr. Peter Stoett to the distinguished group of Canada-US Fulbright Scholars,” says Michael Hawes, executive director of Fulbright Canada. “Professor Stoett’s research is important and timely, and his work will make a significant contribution to this critical subject and inform policy making efforts to address invasive alien species in both Canada and the United States.”

Stoett earned his PhD in international politics from Queen’s University. He also holds a master’s in political science and a BA in politics and history from the University of Guelph. He has authored, co-authored and co-edited 10 books. He has been widely published in peer-reviewed and international scholarly journals, and he has presented his research at numerous conferences around the world. In addition to his position with Concordia, Stoett also teaches at the UN-mandated University for Peace in Costa Rica.
